Another CR4 Challenge - #1269

12/21/2008 1:12 PM

Here's a device a little less obscure than my last.

Whet does this device do?

This device was made in the '50's, but is still in use today. It is not stand alone, it is connected to a very common piece, widely found in the industrial world.

That's easy, it is a coffee grinder that connects directly to the percolator, I see them all the time at Starbucks.

It makes dry ice cakes when hooked to a source of CO2.

I see two devices in the photograph.

One, every body is trying to guess.

Other one is on back side, the most powerful device in the world... PEN

Hello Bricky,

It looks like a grinder to me. Maybe connected to an air line perhaps?

Spray dried coffee?

Take care and happy holidays......................

But would a grinder or grinder nose piece (attachment) be a "very common piece, (still) widely found in the industrial world"? Or even in the non-industrialized world...where plastic has yet to replace cast iron?

Whet does this device do?

Is that a typo, or a subtle hint? As in a sharpening device? Or are you trying to see if anyone is sharp enough to pick up on it?

Looks like an adjustable pressure relief valve to me with a manual release, but without hands on I would not make a wager on it.

I'm with you. Some type of pressure venting device. I was leaning towards steam release.

Once again I am late to the party. No invite.....hmmm. <conspiracy and paranoia increasing>

I am starting at the beginning and reading my way down. I am on the PRV boat.

I shall read on to see how it all works out.

My guess is: It's used to sample lubricating oil as in diesel engines or transmissions.

Judging by the size, pepper grinders look almost the same, so since it is bigger I guess a coffee bean grinder!

Hello DDjames:

At first I thought it looked too 'engineerish'? But it could look that way with age?

I am on your side, I think it could be a coffee grinder. Though I would like a better close-up before I would let my coffee be ground in it! But, the original Italian aluminium percolators look like that after a few years?

This is a 'goodun' for sure!

Take care and have a wonderful holiday......................

My second impression was something to do with a steam locomotive control, forward reverse setting on the side with vent, and engage/dis-engage under top cover.

It would appear to be some sort of extrusion device, for a fairly viscous material. Except the vent on top has multiple openings. Square noodles? Never mind...

Hi Bricktop,

Will you explain us what the device do? I ask to some experienced engineers at the company I work but none can answer me.

Regards

Ernesto

The guest in post #3 nailed it. You hook it up to a CO2 cylinder, and it makes dry ice pucks.

Here's what the modern units look like:

Thanks BB! I have more to come. I'll post another tomorrow. I'm cleaning out the "back room" at work. I just can't believe the very outdated, (and very expensive), stuff I've found, that is pretty much useless today. (However, I'm holding on the the dry ice maker. We used it to chill down acetone, to calibrate thermocouples, for the deep freeze. We outsource that now).

Dry ice can be really fun. I know some funny pratical jokes to play with it. Anyone else?

OOPS.

Forgot to sign in when I posted the answer.

Worked at Motorola years ago and we used one for many different cooling purposes.

They make a lot of noise and spew CO2 out the top vent when forming a puck, but they did make dry ice.

I don't think they were very efficient.

Merry Christmas!

Okay. Tchnically I was wrong. However the inverted PRV would be sort of....nevermind.

So why in Petes petunias do you have one of these things lieing about anyway.

Oh yeah....I just thought of all the "usefull" crap in my garage.

I just thought of a few new markets for this device. Anyplace where injuries could occur but the owners and operators don't want to or can't pay for the refrigeration or storage needed to keep ice on hand. Sports arenas, factories, construction sites, and mines are some of the possible candidates. Someone sprains an ankle, let's say, and a trainer or supervisor makes a few dry ice pucks to apply to the swollen area.
