Take a mini-tree and a sharp penknife, carve until desired shape is required.

Mini as in model or slightly bigger?

Carve away anything that doesn't look like a crane. Personally I would use toothpicks to create the boom. Much easier than attempting to carve a 2x4.

That is unless your refering to the kind with wings and feathers.
