Baldor Capacitors Wiring

01/11/2009 2:24 PM

I have a 5hp,1725 rpm, single phase motor on my compressor,it's wired to a box? then to the fuse box with 2 breakers. The 3 capacitors and wiring burnt up. I got a diagram from baldor that shows only 2 capacitors so I tryed to wire them as best I could from what wires were left and the diagram. There is a Black wire and 2 white wires coming fom the motor. It ran for 1 minute and burnt the 2 black capacitors, the silver one I couldn't tell.Does anyone know how to wire the capacitors,a simple diagram would be nice.

There are basically 2 different motors with capacitors:- Capacitor start only and Capacitor start & run.

The capacitor start only version has usually a centrifugal switch to remove the capacitors once the motor is up to speed. What can happen with these is that the switch gets dirty, does not open as and when it should and it leaves the caps in circuit all the time and as they are usually not rated for continuous usage, they can burn up or even explode....maybe this is what happened to you.

Check to see if there is such a switch in your motor by contacting the manufacturer again.

If no such switch exists (or its electronic equivalent), then you have the second type of motor.....
