Bad Science wins again

01/26/2009 11:40 AM

The new president has take moves to overturn the former administrations stance on EPA standards. They will be allowing states to set their own levels of emissions, the whole thing started with California, big surprise.

Interesting that a move was taken last week to limit lobbying in Washington, and you have a state like California where nothing happens by anything else than lobby pressure.

Just what the auto industry needs a new hurdle to recovery.

The solution would be to just ignore California, build cars for every other state, or at least those without rules based on bad science.

What "bad science" are you referring to? If you're going to put forward a claim, it's best to provide information about why you have taken a particular point of view. Provide some links, some data, etc. - something other than opinion stated as fact.

Why is this "bad science"? I don't see any "science" in your own argument, sir.

My apologies, I should have included a link or two, but I cannot seem to find a way to past the link into the post.

The California lobby has been preaching that the automotive world has been causing global warming for years. The car/truck is an obvious choice since it is so viable.

What may not be obvious is that Cow flatulence produces more of what has become to be known as greenhouse gas than the whole automotive fleet. Google it and see for yourself.

http://talk.livedaily.com/showthread.php?t=558643 I figured it out, yahoo I can paste now.

CO2 is a ground hugging pollutant, want to reduce it, plant something.

On the the Auto Industry related problem, http://money.cnn.com/?cnn=yes notice thousands more layoffs, and these are manufacturing jobs for the most part, well paying jobs, the people who might just buy a vehicle that costs more because it is a hybrid. The 'Green' car costs more than the same model with a traditional power plant. So what happens, automakers have to make hybrid automobiles to qualify for funding, but no one can afford the buy the hybrid vehicles. Get a loan, not likely, the lenders have made it almost impossible to borrow money.

So why has California got such a problem? Ever been there, the coastal region is all concrete, not know for CO2 absorption, as the State gets more populated the former green as in vegetation covered is paved over. Time to stop blaming someone else and making the rest of the country pay for their mistakes.

There are greenhouse gasses that may or may not be causing problems, but think for a moment about the sample, climate records have net been kept for long enough to be a viable reference.

Discussion?

Kevin,

Now, Now.

Let's tackle one problem at a time. What's wrong with trying to do better. We can't kill all the cows and pigs and rip up LA and plant trees, so let's take a small step. Just a very small course correction in the grand scheme of things. By the time it's all worked out it could be years before the automakers really have to do something.

I agree that we have NO historical climate record in any geological sense of time, but, I'm not willing to just let Detroit go back to carburetors and drum brakes, because it was ok.

I consider the link you provided questionable, if not radical.

Hi LL

I agree it is a bit radical, but it was all I could find on short notice, and as luck would have it my internet supplier decided to upgrade it's computers today, not telling anyone of course, and by mid-day the system had all but collapsed. Finding the correct articles I was looking for.

When it comes down to it, the global warming thing now climate change is all supposition and during this current finical meltdown is really not the time to make things even more difficult for the world wide auto industry, and defiantly not the Claifornication of the world.

See the current Green Peace television membership campaign, using the fool who played Captain Kirk, gotta love those marketing people, not to say I would not have done the same thing.

I heard today that states will not be allowed to set emission standards below federal government standards.

California (and Massachusett) have stricter standards.

The law suites for restriction of trade under Article 1, Section. 8. The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;

To borrow Money on the credit of the United States;

To regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes;

only congress can regulate trade between the states, having a vehicle that passes US standards must be allowed to be sold in all states.

Not to worry - the market will take care of everything

I heard on the radio yesterday that the hottest sellers in automotive right now are....used pickups.

So apparently we are all going back to work.
