Estimating science building central vacuum system costs

02/01/2009 2:18 PM

We are trying to get a general idea of the cost of a house vacuum system for a lab building compared with the cost of individual vacuum pumps. Are there estimating guidelines somewhere that we can use to arrive at a planning figure before contacting an engineering firm for a formal estimate? We're interested in the ability to specify the number of labs, number of vacuum ports, and size of the building, and from this get a ballpark figure for the whole system, based on "typical" assumptions about tubing dimensions and costs, installation costs, and pump costs (including a back-up pump). Can this be done, or do we have to go straight to an engineering estimate? We have been able to find reference materials that would guide us in such an estimate. Thanks for any help!

These are called budgetary quotes and assume that you know enough about the project to engage a potential supplier and get his help, from the beginning of the project.

Some potential suppliers may have such software for your use.

Your "guesstimate" may bear no connection with real world when you do go out for bids.

Check with a Company called Republic Sales and Mfg.

They quoted a system for me after doing a site survey and took particular care to size the system to fit my current need and made it capable of being added to in the future for additional load.

Great bunch of people to work with as well.

Contact a vacuum pump manufacturer that sells such systems. They will probably size it for you. Busch does a lot of that type of work. If you're looking to get into the micron range of vacuum, stick with individual pumps.

Make sure there is provision to detect when someone accidentally or intentionally leaves a valve open with nothing connected! Otherwise you could waste huge amounts of energy running the pump!

Thanks to those who have responded so far, but I just noticed an important typo in my original question. It should have said: "We have been unable to find reference materials that would guide us in such an estimate." I'm still hoping to find some guidance for arriving at a ball park (or budget) number.
