Need help finding a gearmotor supplier

02/08/2009 12:18 AM

Hi folks,

I am having a difficult time finding the correct motor for a product I have in the design phase. I realize I could have these made by offshore manufacturers, at present my maximum order will be in the 50 - 100 range, instead of the 1000+ minimum quantities needed to buy overseas. With that said-any help in finding a source would be greatly appreciated.

Specs:

12V DC motor OR gear motor

approx 1 amp no load

3K-6K RPM

max diameter = 1.55 inches

shaft must be

Shaft:can be 3/16", 6mm or .250" <THIS is the hard part> must be 3"-3.5" long smooth shaft...no keyway

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Bill

Try here

You need to specify if you want a servo motor, stepper, brushed, brushless...etc. These can all come in very similar packages so it really depends what kind of control you want over them and what kind of controller you are using.

Since the motor you refer to is brushed-DC then you should be able to find quite a few. For the best efficiency I would recommend going brushless...for torque you can skip the gears and go with pancake steppers. Both of these would require a better motor controller.

There's a lot of electric motor companies out there that make some pretty convoluted products for reasons that escape me. The globalspec search tool will get you narrowed down to a couple dozen companies.

Cheers!

Hi Bill

I have obtained samples from iris@kindlymotor.com

Website http://www.kindlymotor.com/

The motor gearboxes are very quiet and the price reasonable.

Hello again to my expert explainers.

Sorry to hone in on someone elses thread but it has raised a question I have on this subject. Exactly what is a gear motor as opposed to a non-gear motor? Gear motors are duty free to import to Canada the other ones are not.

The long shaft from the gearbox is not safe and I do not think anyone is going to guarantee this shaft not to overload the bearings and also to run true. You may want to take on the responsibility of the loading on that length of special shaft i.e. buy a standard motor with smaller shaft and replace it with your own or get some agreement with the supplier.

There are companies like Danaher, DPM, Rotalink and lots others who can supply these types.
