Wiress Doorbell

02/08/2009 8:37 AM

We bought 3 wirless doorbells so we can have 1 upstairs and 2 downstairs...
We still don't hear the damn things as they don't work half the time despite a supposed range of 70 metres.
Anyone played at hacking 'em to increase range?
The straight line distances are only about 10 yards.
The push button unit has a 3v battery...maybe if I stick two in and and give it 6v?.
(I have 2 spare push button units to destroy experiment with)
I might tack one into work and get get the 'scope on it..although I hate RF...(it makes my fur stand on end)

I'd play with the antennas first, maybe extend them a little. Would help to know at what frequency they operate, and how long the antennas are. Anything shorter than a quarter wavelength can likely be extended to that length and increase your range. Also try having the antennas polarized the same direction.

Any idea what the frequency is?

My wireless burglar alarm used to work fine until the frequency band was taken over by Tetra at 418 MHz, Tetra is situated just off of 418 MHz but it swamps the rf input making communication between units impossible, so I had to ditch it...

I bought a wireless door bell after seeing the neighbours one, and after buying it I found out why it was so cheap.... The wireless transmitter was just an rf 'splatter' generator, so every time the neighbour's door bell rang mine did and vice versa!!!

It's a ByronTX31EU-2

(Says 'Made in China...but it looks more like plastic to me)

Is this one of those units that gets direct RF from the button? I had one and as you say they bite the big one. I already had a hard wired bell, so I got one of the extender units and it works great. The unit gets placed near the existing doorbell. When the doorbell goes off the unit senses the tone and sends an RF frequency to the extender unit. Works good, especially if theres room to fit the sensor inside the chimes box on the hard wired bell. The extender plugs into any available outlet, so no need to replace batteries in the extender chimes.

Maybe this will help you on how to increasing your range? 1st let me tell you I had a similar propblem. This is what I did (worked at appox. 85 meters +). From the push button unit I ran a small single white wire (Ant.) back or near the main unit @ or near 65 meter range, along the Ciling-Wall eage, this work very well. Try this: Connect a wire to the button, and run the wire Lth.? near the main Unit. Have someone pushing the button as you get closer and closer to the main unit tell you hear it work. Good luck! Russ.....

Cheers, I'll give it a go. Quite where on the button unit do I connect the wire tho' .
Or is there an obvious antennaa track/wire?

Hi, Del,

I have hacked these to extend the useful range by adding a wire to the antenna strip, but, alas, I can't remember how to explain in further detail.

Can you post photos of both sides of the transmitter board? I'd send photos to you, but I had someone hack my right knee a week ago, so am under some duress, and it's rather hard for me to hop around with a camera in hand.

Cheers,
If I can't see the antenna strip, I'll post some pics.
I should be able to find it having worked in electronics for umpteen years...but you never know.

It may be just a loop on the PCB or a short straight antenna.

Using the lowest value capacitor that you just happen to have around (a few Picofarads at the most) solder a short length of wire to the cap and the cap to this loop or rod. Try a length that is the length of the loop or the antenna, eg just double the length as near as dammit.

This can have one of several unfortunate results if too long:-

1) it goes off frequency completely 2) someone else's doorbell push activates yours......

Observe anti static precautions when opening the button and connecting to the antenna. Otherwise it may never work again!

You have had some good advice already and I will not repeat it again, but do not try to up the voltage as depending on the design, its probably already at the maximum it can handle, more will just damage it!!

My wireless doorbell goes off at the darndest time and scares the bejeebers out of Mrs. BeriBeri and me. Methinks that it picks up someone's garage door opener or a local small aircraft triggering the landing lights or ?

Why don't you go back to shop where you purchased it. Meyow with him and ask for solution or replacement or money back.

I bought 'em a while back, and havn't got the receipts etc...
Anyhow, it would be more stressful than what I'm doing here..I enjoy tinkering with stuff, whereas I don't enjoy arguing with shop managers who know nothing about RF.
