Is a Reflux Splitter a small scale distillation column?

02/11/2009 10:57 AM

OK, I'm not a chemist but am working on a project where I need to know what a Reflux Splitter is and how it can be used. Most importantly, I'm trying to see if there are new applications for reflux splitters and similar distillation processes.

Hello Guest,

A reflux splitter is a device, much like a valve, that adjusts how much reflux the column is getting. On top of the column, you have a reflux condenser. The reflux splitter either sends all of the condensed liquid back to the top of the column (total reflux) or sends it into the receiver as product (no reflux). The reflux splitter has a timer that times how often the splitter is in one of these modes in relation to the other. This is called the reflux ratio - this ratio determines optimal separation.

Yor r right Reflux splitter mainly use in small scale plant. When coil type condensers are used inside Distillation column, then vapour generated cool down and condensate material fall on Reflux splitter which have small-small hole for Reflux & bypass line for distillate. This mainly remove the requirement of seperate line for reflux and distillate.

Where vapor load is very high, like 10000 kg/hr in that case we cant use coil type condenser inside the column bcs high vapour velocity can damage the Condenser, thats why seperate condenser, and reflux line, offtake line required
