Mini-DIN 8-Pin Connectors

02/11/2009 2:45 PM

Question:

I have a audio Recording unit (Yamaha AW4416) which I am attempting to link to a Laptop/PC. The Recording unit was built in the mid 90's, and the hardware connections are becoming outdated it seems. The unit has a "to host" connection which is a 8 pin mini DIN female, which is shown in the manual to be linked to a computer. Today's computers seem to primarily communicate through USB. I believe if i had a older computer with the old 9 pin serial port i might be able to buy/make an adaptor cord to link the two machines. unfortunately my computer is up to date, and i have no 9 pin serial connection. is there a way to somehow get the data from the 8 pin mini din to USB or something similar? Or do i need to rummage through the computer graveyard to find a old computer to work with...?

I also have a "expansion port" on the laptop, but am unfamiliar with the connection type, but it has a little picture of another computer hooked to it. maybe i can use the expansion port to communicate with the AW4416?

Also.. The AW4416 has a SCSI port for external data storage, which i would like to use, but again unfortunately i don't have any SCSI interface with my laptop. Is there something out there that I can convert the SCSI into something useful to me? I looked a bit for a hard drive that has Both SCSI and USB connections but fell short.

I just want the un-mix/mastered tracks so i can run them through pro-tools.

Any Ideas??

Hi RVZ,

I had a laptop that I needed to interface with a DB9 serial port interface. Problem was that there was no serial port interface on my laptop.

The solution: I purchased a Dual serial port PCMCIA card that allowed me to hook up.

They probably have PCI cards that have DB9 serial port interfaces as well.

I went to the link shown above, and found this cable.

CABLE LINK

That should work to get you to the 9-pin DIN. This is called a MIDI port on the keyboard. In the past (not too distant), many sound cards for desktop computers had a MIDI port on them, sometimes shard with the joystick port (by using the proper cable, you could use that port for a joystick, or for MIDI)

Finding and external SCSI drive may be more difficult these days, if you do find one, it might get expensive. If you could post a picture of the SCSI connector on the keyboard, I would take a look to see what I could find that may work for you.

I probably should add, I know more about computers that musical instruments, so if I have erred here, I hope someone will correct me.

Tom

I haven't tried to use the MIDI to communicate. From what i understand, MIDI signal does not actually contain sound information, it contains information of on and off times of a tone, not the actually sound wave. I could be wrong on this.

I can buy a card for the unit that allows FireWire connectivity to transfer 8 channels of audio simultaneously, but would rather not dump another 400$ into the machine.

I just want the individual tracks transfered to a computer... maybe the 400 FireWire network card is my best option. I just know there are multiple ways of communicating with this machine, i need to find one for less than 400$.

I am computer savey, but not a hardware pro.

Thanks for the help.

Have you been HERE? This is a website dedicated to Yamaha Synthesizers. The link is a list of supported SCSI devices for your equipment. The site also tells you how to update the firmware in the device to the latest available. Looks like most of your questions might be answered on that site.

You can use the RCA outs to your sound card direct

I don't think i can get all the tracks separate through the RCA's, I definitely could mix/master on the machine and transfer the 2 stereo tracks to my computer via a CD or RCA's. I really need all the raw data extracted from the machine. I can buy a $400 FireWire network card for the machine, but am not willing to spend any money at the moment.

I just know it can be done, there are a few options... I'll be trying to communicate through a friends cue-base console via midi in the next couple days, although I'm doubtful that will work as needed.

Does the board not have a card reader/writer? You can transfer the files in that manner or take advantage of the hot swap IDE HD feature allowing you to load to a removeable HD then slip the HD into an external IDE enclosure linked via USB to laptop.

Of course you could use the I/O cards: see http://www.yamahaproaudio.com/products/interfaces/ygdai_cards/myguide.php?model=13#checksheet
