A little food for thought.

02/13/2009 12:08 AM

Received this in my email this morning. What does anyone think?

Doctors:

  1. The number of doctors in the U.S. is 700,000
  2. Accidental deaths caused by physicians per year are 120,000
  3. Accidental deaths per physician is 17.14%.

Statistics courtesy of the U.S.Dept of Health &Human Services

Gun Owners:

  1. The number of gun owners in the U.S. is 80,000,000 (yes that's 80 million)
  2. The number of accidental gun deaths per year, all age groups, is 1,500
  3. The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is 0.001875%.

Statistics courtesy of the FBI

Statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners.

Remember, guns don't kill people, doctors do.

FACT: NOT EVERYONE HAS A GUN, BUT ALMOST EVERYONE HAS AT LEAST ONE DOCTOR.

Please alert your friends to this alarming threat. We must ban doctors before this gets completely out of hand!!!

Out of concern for the public at large, I have withheld statistics on lawyers for fear the shock would cause people to panic and seek medical attention.

it is well you did not mention the statistics on lawyers, the mobius strip effect may occurred if indeed that information ever reached the public.

people would be forced to seek medical attention for the increased occurrence of mental disease, which would increase the number of lawsuits, which in turn would increase the lawyer related statistics which would in turn... You get the idea, the next great crisis, just in time to distract us from the current one.

Horrible thought indeed, and no I do not suffer from mental illness, I enjoy it

I best not make another attempt at humor, I need some sleep.

"It is well you did not mention the statistics on lawyers, the mobius strip effect may occurred if indeed that information ever reached the public."

Which is why many lawyers tend to gravitate towards politics as a career........

If each doctor shot a hundred or so gun-owners, the accident rate would go down.

What if the gun-owners shot the lawyers and doctors treated the survivors?

That works for me, but the doctors should be given a tea-break. When they're really over-worked and clumsy, they need to operate on a few bankers

You will be left with no lawyers to get compensation from doctors through legal means while doctors will continue to kill the patients and get Scot free . Good time for Doctors

More food for thought:

A father walks into a restaurant with his young son. The boy is holding a quarter.

Suddenly, the boy starts choking, going blue in the face.

The father realizes the boy has swallowed the quarter and starts panicking, shouting for help.

A well dressed, attractive and serious looking woman, in a blue business suit is sitting at a coffee bar, reading a newspaper and sipping a cup of coffee. At the sound of the commotion, she looks up, puts her coffee cup down, neatly folds the newspaper and places it on the counter, gets up from her seat and makes her way, unhurried, across the shop.

Reaching the boy, the woman carefully drops his pants; takes hold of the boy's testicles and starts to squeeze and twist, gently at first and then ever so firmly.

After a few seconds the boy convulses violently and coughs up the quarter, which the woman deftly catches in her free hand.

Releasing the boy's testicles, the woman hands the coin to the father and walks back to her seat in the coffee bar without saying a word. As soon as he is sure that his son has suffered no ill effects, the father rushes over to the woman and starts thanking her saying,

"I've never seen anybody do anything like that before, it was fantastic. Are you a doctor?"

"No," the woman replied. "Divorce lawyer."

Good one. So what happens when a couple of lesbian divorce lawyers breaks up and decide to represent themselves? How do they squeeze each other in the nuts?

Bumper sticker I saw this afternoon:

Guns don't kill people, Socialist Democrats do.

I want one of these bumper stickers. Anybody know where I can get one?

So did the liberal Socialist Democrats ever succeed in peeling Charlton Heston's rifle from his cold dead fingers?

What the US needs is to have the feds insist that the existing gun laws are enforced rather than creating even more.

Right. There are people who have legitimate uses for guns e.g. farmers, to protect their livestock and crops from predation. The correct solution is to lock up criminals to ensure they cannot cause harm, rather than a blanket ban that hurts those with legitimate needs but barely affect those who know how to circumvent the ban.

By the way, if the lesbian divorce lawyers steal each other's batteries, wouldn't it be a zero sum game since they'll simply use each other's batteries instead?

We have that problem up here in the Great White North, guns are ritually banned, you can buy one if you jump through enough hoops and apply for all the various permits. Problem being guns on the street are even easier to get if you know where to look. Sad state of affairs. I have not shot a single round in longer than I can remember, and all I shoot is paper targets. I would love to go shooting again, it is a great way to relax, but the effort involved is just more than I am willing to do, and i pay enough taxes disguised as fees as it is.

The batteries may be of different size to accommodate different forms of entertainment, only a guess.

DVader, it doesn't matter if the person has a legitimate need for the weapon or not, some people simply like to collect them and that is as legitimate as it needs to be. If someone wants one, they should be able to buy it or own it. The only exception should be those who have been found to be untrustworthy of ownership due to violent felonies. (and only violent ones)

Re: A little food for thought.

Exactly. My point in raising the fact that some people have legitimate needs is to prove that blanket bans are ludicrous and only hurt the innocent. The real solution to violent crime is to keep the perpetrators where they belong i.e. behind bars, and for those with violent tendencies, behind bars indefinitely or even on death row. I love weapons myself, and I think that banning legitimate collection because of the actions of a handful of morons is like banning eating simply because a few people choked to death from not chewing their food sufficiently. That WAS the point of my original post, wasn't it? That if you want to ban something because it's potentially lethal, then anything and everything that can kill should be banned. And then where do you draw the line?

Surely the thing to do with guns is come down hard on those who misuse them, but leave ownership otherwise fairly open.

The home defence weapon of choice in Belgium is a sub machine gun. They don't seem to have many home invasion type burglaries and school shootings etc don't seem to happen.

In law abiding hands they actually seem to deter crime. Whenever restrictions on ownership are tightened, crime seems to increase, leading to more of what hasn't worked before.

I love the original post. My mother told me that during the depression, people couldn't afford to see doctors and the general health of the population improved! (I'm not sure what measures were used to determine if this effect was genuine or simply anecdotal).

Well said. Crackdown hard on criminals, not general ownership of guns, and certainly not on law-abiding gun-owners.

Funny how that happens, as the UK does so does the former colonies, and we thought we had left the control of the the crown.

It has to be correct all these pills that doctors prescribe are more harmful than the percentage benefit that the pills provide. When we do not have money to visit Doctor or buy medicine ,may be, we live longer than without these pills.

More decades ago than I care to admit t, "Readers Digest" had a little item where a 99 year old left her Doctor a trunk, which she said held the secret for her longevity.

On receiving the trunk, the Doctor opened it to find every prescription he had ever written for her - unfilled!

I had a specialist who used to start off his consultation with "What are we currently poisoning you with". When I queried this, he replied "I,m not kidding. All these drugs are poisons. We just hope the good they do exceeds the harm."

I appreciated his honesty. I'd still be going to him except I moved 400km away to Cairns.

Hi sceptic,

During an annual medical check up our medical officer told me that my BP was a little higher side even though I was only 45 years at that time. During his personal meeting what he had to say was "you have to start with a regular dose of pills and once I start with it i will have to continue with it daily and life long . And he further added , due to side effect of regular use of the medicine I can get a heart attack and die and if I do not take the medicine I will suffer a stoke and it may led to paralysis . So taking medicine or not taking is my choice weather I want to die of heart attack or suffer with a life long paralysis due to the stroke."

I took the first choice as I would like to die on a single shot and do not want to die everyday. Fortunately I am still alive.
