An effecient and effective pump to deliver water.

03/07/2009 11:54 AM

Hi.

Please, I would like you to assist me in the choice of pump to be used to lift water from a reservoir. The reservoir is 12' wide,13' long and 15' deep. Approximately it has a capacity to hold about 8, 000gallons of water. The required pump is to pump water intermitenetly from the reservoir into a 500 gallon overhead tank. What make and capacity of pump do you recommend that can give an effecient service? Also what is the most suitable position to install the pump since the reservoir is about 20' from the overhead tank?

Regards,

Emma.

Make of pump- any good one from your location.

capacity - Watt required is =mgh

m- mass of water you want to lift in one second

g - 9.8 m/sec*sec

h- Height in meters

Type -any mono-block pump should work

Best position for motor is keep it lower then reservoir to avoid any priming problem in long run.

Hi Emma

The capacity of the pump will be determined by the use of water from the tank. If you for example need two tanks a day (1000gal) a 5GPM pump will deliver the water in 200min,

These small pump are not that efficient and it may be better to first choose a pump and then work out if the pump time is acceptable.

The height of the tank above the pump, friction and other losses would also be needed. Using 2 float switches would be a good idea. Top one to switch off when the tank is full and one at about 20% of tank height to switch it on when the water has dropped that far.

A good option may be to visit a pump supplier in your vicinity and get a quote on different models. and then decide on the most suitable regarding pumping hours etc. (have a look at pool pump units for example)

Feel free to submit the quote for comments.
