Which Is Greener?

03/10/2009 7:18 AM

I've thrown away my useless wireless door bell system as the 3 bell units were using batteries at an alarming rate. However the 2A transformer on the replacement system will be drawing it's queiscent current 24/7.

Of course the greenest solution would be to switch the transformer primary though the bell push...but safety issues forbid this.
Surley we sould be able to come up with a green solution...?
I need 3 bells, 1 upstairs, 2 down stairs.

Old fashioned bell on a string???

Del

Ya, this would be perfect:

However, we have one here we can let go cheap, (slightly damaged):

Solar cell on the roof dedicated to the bell transformers?

Have you considered a system of low voltage relays?

I never liked those wireless doorbells anyway.

a very simple solution comes to mind.

put a small sign at the door which says "Knock and holler"

Here's an odd solar-powered doorbell. Or to be more accurate, a solar-powered half a doorbell.

http://original.solar-active.com/doorbell.htm

And my great-grampa had one of these rotary doorbells. (I drove him insane playing with it as a child).

why not put an enemy on the door-step ?

That will also keep wanted guests away (that way you can visit all, and no return visits )

if you keep him around, sb, Del won't be able to visit you.

and, I didn't know gremlins kept dogs. thought they were your mortal enemies, too.

Use the door switch to power a relay (opto-triac) to the primary of your transformer. You can use a timer relay if you have a multiple chime system.

I've used a wireless doorbell system, one bell and one push button. I didn't have to change the 3AA batteries on the bell until well over one year. I don't see why they would consume a lot of power

These had 2xAA in each one.. The receiver was presumably the power drain.
I can't say exactly how long they were lasting (~6months?)...but the problem was they seemed to loose range as the batteries went low and with 3 units, that's about 6xAA ever 6 months, no so much the money/environment...more the irritation at missing callers/deliveries.
I'm resorting to good ol' fashioned wire.

Have you considered going old school and removing the bells entirely and letting the idiots knock? Free, no power consumption, no energy used in manufacture, nothing to recycle or end up in a landfill, green as green gets.

Gotta say I was quite fond of the Addams family doorbell;

I seem to recall a pull of about three feet followed by an Aooogah!

It is never too early either.

If you get a tea, just have it.

If you don't, try to get it.

Last option (depend on your energy level after the FasT) get up and make a cup.

PS For me, liquid and gas is needed together however it depends upon. All are not as civilised and love the spark and fire as we do, like to see things go up in the smoke .

You could hire someone like this to man the front door.....

"Bombardier' Billy Wells - first British Heavyweight to win the Lonsdale belt (in 1911) and the "Golden Gong" man at the start of Rank Organisation films from 1948 onwards - was the Landlord of the Fountain public house" !!

I'm going to check the thickness of my tin foil hat. 'Six degrees of separation' my *^/# !

Why not do a Trevor Baylis....you could have a charging handle by your computer. An hour or so each evening might be enough to get all the units charged up. good job your a cat - two paws for typing, one for cranking, and one......to spare

Hi Del,

You can mount a mini x-bow with fixed tragectory...

An hardwired intercom or monitor system which transmits via the electric circuitry; I don't recall what they're called.
