How To Obtain Actual Weight of Stairway

03/21/2009 7:03 AM

Good day..

Guys, how to calculate the actual weight of stairway (including stair plate, handrail, handrail post, middle rail, support, etc)?

I need this to predict the bill of quantities for my stairway (BoQ)

For example, according to my calculation, i got 2,000 kg. Then how much is the extra factor (multiplier) to make it closer to its actual weight?

Thanks guys..

What type of material? Wood? Steel? Composite?

How many steps?

Risers or no risers?

If you are going to ask the question, please give all info that you have. If this is HOMEWORK, as it seems to be, please do your own work.

Hey calm down bro.. i forgot to give the detail.

The material is carbon steel ASTM A36. 135 steps. It is a straight stairway (with stairway platform).

I just ask about the overhead factor (multiplier) that make weight of my stairway much closer to the actual weight.

What do you mean by homework?! Yes this is my work, i found difficulties and i ask to this magnificent forum.. So is it wrong?

Thank you Sir for the response..

I'll do your house later. Right now, I'm trying to design a davit by osmosis.♥

This web site is almost like gambling. You keep going back, even though the last time you were here some jerk pi--ed you off by saying something stupid.

Why people can not answer a simple question like this ? build it and then weigh.

For the extras weigh the scraps too.

In any design there are some steps that are taken, and the extras that are meant are taken care of in these for this no designer i have seen going to net and asking. ,

Sorry if I sounded harsh, it seemed like a homework question due to the fact that there were so many variables left out. If I offended you, well I offend lots of people, ask sb, it's in my nature, it happens. It was not intentional.

As an FA at De Vry I hated when I would assign a homework project then find that some students used other resources to complete the task rather than doing all of the prescribed steps. I guess I'm just not very tolerant of students cheating, so when I see something that looks like homework I make it known.

I won't beg forgiveness, but will tell you that if you look back on CR4 you will find a very good web site for calculating stairways that I provided for another thread. Good luck.

This gentleman before posted the request for how to design the circular stairway on an oil/gas storage tank, in detail, for a quote, for maintenance.. pretty sure this is related.

why not just call a stair case mfg. Give them the rise, run and height from floor to top and if a landing is involved provide that info also. Describe the hand rails and banister configuration, and the width. Determine weather your request is for a spiral, straight, elliptic , winder or a combination of several of these options. And for those who are not aware that the different varieties of stair cases can be combined, I can tell you where to find several hundred custom constructed of these examples, all individually constructed to fit in the many condos, and they are all constructed according to the uniform Building Code. No two to them weigh the same. I designed each of them and constructed the custom banisters in My shop in South Lake Tahoe California.

As for the weight we calculate the board ft of the lumber and that is what we price out as raw materials. We don't eat the waste.

Thanks chris,

This is my smart ass answer to a smart ass question.

First calculate the quantity and weight of the top half of the stair case and then double it. As for the equasion (ax2)+(bx2) = c

A of course being the materials for the top half of the globe and b being the materials for the bottom half of said globe. They go from small to large and large to small, without a stair in the center. The building codes state that the deminsion of two treds and one riser shall not be less than 24" nor greater than 25".
