Calculate the volume =

Multiply by density

Get the weight

One of the ways of working it out is to do a "rubbing":

  • take a sheet of squared paper and a pencil
  • hold the paper firmly over the end of the steel
  • rub gently with the pencil, until an impression of the steel is left on the paper
  • count the squares blacked in
  • calculate the cross-sectional area
  • measure the length
  • obtain the volume
  • divide by the density of steel

2" X 2" X 1/4" - 1.44 KG/FT

2.5" X 2.5" X 1/4" - 1.83 KG/FT

3" X 3" X 1/4" - 2.22 KG/FT

3" X 3" X 3/8" - 3.25 KG/FT

4" X 4" X 5/16" - 3.85 KG/FT

4" X 4" X 3/8" - 4.41 KG/FT

4" X 4" X 1/2" - 5.78 KG/FT

This procedure is strictly not acceptable by our Quality management System .

You talk in imperial system

1.5" X 1.5" X 1/4" - 2.31 lbs/FT

or in SI (or modified SI - mm and Kg)

38.1 x 38.1 x 6.35 = 3.44 Kgs/m

The weights given are in Kgs/ft not lbs/ft.

Convert it to read :

40mm x 40mm x 8mm - or

50mm x 50mm x 8mm

This procedure is strictly not acceptable by our Quality management System.

Dosen't matter as long as you have an idea to estimate the total weight/length you require with +/- 99% accuracy. To me thats good enough for me.
