CRT Screens and Magnets

03/27/2009 4:25 PM

Hi, I was just wondering, why do magnets muck up the colours on CRT screens. Then, they can be fixed just by deguassing. Thanks Bondy111

Magnets deflect the incoming electron beam.

Which means? they deflect the cathode rays, which make the picture? Why does it leave a discolouration?

CRT's are quite sensitive to magnetic fields, its a wonder they don't get screwed up from the earth's magnetic fields. The electron beams have to be quite accurate to hit the right spot. They have adjustable rings in the back with small magnets on them, that are adjusted at the factory.

The phosphor screen on a crt has three places (RGB) for the beams to hit for each pixel, if the beam is shifted off slightly then your colors will be off.

Degaussing will remove the residual magnetic field you have created on the screen and hopefully restore it to its original status.

As a side note some CRT in particular projection ones need to be left in place for a week or two to adjust the the earth's magnetic fields before you can really set them up correctly.

Wikipedia may help you with this. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathode_ray_tube

Excellent answer frankd20. I would like to add some to your post. "its a wonder they don't get screwed up from the earth's magnetic fields." Actually they do. If you have a small - say 13" color TV with a CRT try turning it on its side while it is on and notice how horribly the color screws up. Then return it to its original position and it should look fine. Technology has improved over the years so that the earths magnetic field is not as big a problem as it once was. For instance, The first color sets in the states required a service call every time you oriented the TV. Such as moving it from a North wall to an East wall. Degaussing and purity Adjustments were typically done. (as a side note: service calls were $3 - $6) The purity magnets are now factory set and don't require regular attention. An automatic degausser is included which demagnitizes the shadow mask each time the set is turned on (From a cold start). It won't work if you turn it off and right back on. Hope this helps

One minor detail no one seemed to mention that is relevant to the question. The shadow mask is made of steel. The shadow mask sits directly behind the phosphor on the back of the screen and is what causes the electron beam from each respective electron gun to land only on its respective color of phosphor.

Since it is manufactured of a ferrous metal it is susceptible to acquiring residual magnetic fields with the obvious results. Of course all this has gone with the advent of flat screen.

Do you mean flat screen CRTs do not need a shadow mask?

Or are you referring to non CRT technologies?

non-CRT, of course

Sometimes the obvious is masked by generalisations.

Any color crt has to have a mask to allow the electron beam from only one of the 3 guns to hit the proper color phosphor. Even Sony trinitrons (one gun) crt's have them.

Yes, I was just making a point on usage of flat screen as a definition of non CRT technologies, witch may lead to misunderstanding of the fundamentals being explained.

Our TV gets this colour screwed up in one room and facing a particular direction, say south. But keeping in another room facing the same direction, south, doesn't get affected.

Could this be because of the magnetic field build up and concentrated at some favourable places more than other due to usage of iron rods in RCC? If yes, is this magnetic field build up on such iron rods in RCC is due to earth magnet or induced from power wiring crisscrossing the building?

Here's somthing to ponder... If a magnet only attracts ferrous materials, or like magnets, would it be safe to say that electicity, light and water are ferrous? a magnetic field pulls and distorts all things. It is my personal theory that magnets and magnetic fields is another form of energy. I also have a theory on Tesla's magical box and how he pulled AC current out of thin air.

Magnetic field has energy is a public knowledge, everyone will know it.

Well, Whats your wonderful theory in face of Teslas box? put out.

One of my friends once came to me that he had trouble with the TV, discoloring of the screen, i just moved his big ass doubly surround speaker a little away from the TV and presto the TV screen was OK again.

I also had a big screen TV with Boxes built into it but the maker magnetic shielding was somewhat weak and one side had a greenish hue to it

yesyen maybe that is part of your problem?

I do not know how much I'm off the topic. I was just curious to know the impact of being among the strong magnetic field?

Earth magnet, fine, is all over, but should be stronger near poles than around middle/equator.

Are there any recorded facts about the influence of this field on human?

Is sleeping (that is where we spend most of life) east-west better than north-south or the other way?

And living in concrete buildings with tons of steel surrounded by electrical wiring and electromagnetic gadgets, subject us to greater flex of the induced magnetism. Was there any study or finding on this?

On this regards only I was saying some corners in buildings like ours with concrete roofs/floors (RCC) are notorious for TV color distortion. Is this an indication of stronger magnetic flex concentration?

Epke, no additional speakers other than the built-in, still looses the color in some corners/directions.
