Hi Asitha,

You need to try a different English translator, the one you used is not working very well.

Read plenty of English books. Keep a dictionary by your side to refer to anytime you see an unfamiliar word. Note how the author uses the word in his passage. Speak English more frequently. Avoid colloqualisms unless absolutely necessary. These are just a few commonsense pointer.

Try to listen to the BBC World Service radio broadcasts. It is English the way that native English speakers use it, though slowed down a little to improve clarity for those whose first language is not English.

English contains many difficulties for the unwary. Many users have distinct accents that an experienced listener can use to identify the town that the speaker comes from. Some accents can be very strong, and use dialect words that are not found everywhere. People speaking together in their local accent will use dialect and accent readily, and will speed up, making it difficult for people from outside the district to understand sometimes.

Some people claim that English is "easy to learn and difficult to master"!

"that z grate pal..."

Since you're seeking help with your English here, please use proper punctuation and spelling. It should be "That's great, pal". Also, start every new sentence with a capital letter.

Hello asitha1987,

My first advice is to sign up for an English speaking & writing class. If you want to work in today's world, knowing how to speak and write in English is going be a big advantage.

I hope your wormy reply — I believe you meant to say "I hope to receive your warm replies". Mistakes like that can get you in trouble.

My next would be to "try and be honest in everything you say and do". I think a lot of the problems in this world stem from the lack of honesty.

What prompted you to ask this question? Knowing the reasons may help us give better answers.

regards,

Vulcan

What part of Sri Lanka are you from? There are a number of Toastmasters Clubs in Sri Lanka. They can help you develop your speaking skills as well as your leadership and thinking skills. I highly recommend that you join one of their clubs.

You can check out their website's search engine and find a club near you. If you have difficulty using it, just tell me what part of Sri Lanka and I'll post the list here.

regards,

Vulcan

Re: help me

I am from Galle

I didn't find Galle in the list. Is it anywhere near the following?

  • Colombo
  • Jaffna
  • Katubedda
  • Katunayake
  • Kurunegala
  • Moratuwa
  • Nugegoda
  • Pahala Kondadeniya
  • Panadura
  • Puttalam
  • Slave Island

These are just places where there are clubs (Colombo alone has over 20 clubs) but since I don't know which ones you are close to, I can't give you any addresses right now.

Toastmasters International is a worldwide organization where people learn the art of public speaking. Being able to express oneself in front of people is a valuable skill. As a member you will learn this by speaking in front of your club mates. Later, as you grow in confidence and skill, you can speak in front of other people as well.

There are lots of things you will learn. Making presentations, sales pitches, telling stories, making jokes, and lots more.

If you want to learn leadership, you can become an officer of your club. Later, you can run for area, division and district postions. If you're really good, you might even be an international officer.

We also have yearly speech competitions. If you get past the club, area, division and district levels, you can compete at the international contests. I used to be a division champion and the things you learn during the competitions will really boost your confidence in public speaking.

Try joining a Toastmasters Club. You won't regret it.

regards,

Vulcan

Write in the language you understand, so others can understand it.

When you ask a question on a forum, ask a question.

When you ask a question, use a title that means something. 'help me' is not informative to the reader.

You are welcome, and I hope worm's don't eat your responses.
