I know firmwear, I write it for chemical dosing systems, the stuff I write (generally as assembler code) goes into a 'one time programmable' chip, so it can't be up loaded/downloaded/modified...so it's just as well that my code always works first time.

Firmware is software (i.e. programs and data) that gets stored in a permanent (programmable) or semi-permanent (programmable erasable) memory. It could be in a set-top box, a BIOS chip, a modem, a car 'computer' or any number of other things.

Depending on the device and the type of memory, you may or may not be able to download updates.

If it fails, the device is usually kaput.

Firmwear is like SB.

They put it everywhere. It's the bit in the middle that let the Software load and talk to the Hardware

Little bit Hardware + Dash of Software = Firmware

Sapper

Re: firmware

The 486DX had

1 ROM or nonvolatile memory containing the Basic Input Output System (BIOS) and that contained the drivers to communicate with peripherals and the basic system functions.

The functions were accessible via interrupt calls indexed by the interrupt table (created at startup / boot).

It also included the Y2K bug That treated any unknown date as a fixed date in 1991 etc.

2 The video card also contained code to interface the system to the CRT.

both are called firmware.

The code in the ROM can be read and changed and burned into new Epsom's. That is why it is called firm and not hard
