What was the solvent that it disolved in? Water? Acetone? MEK?

Water will dissolve PVA, poly vinyl alkoxy (alcohol), and not much else.

MEK, acetone will dissolve acrylics, styrenes and after a while swell others.

Toluene will swell and dissolve silicone resins, slowly.

That's all I know.

In addition to the above,

  • toluene and butanone will dissolve polystyrene.
  • trichloromethane is used as a solvent to join PVC and ABS

so what plastic material is being discussed, please?

"so what plastic material is being discussed, please?"

That's the question. We're guessing, due to the lack of information. The OP doesn't know either.

Hi,

It's PVA film. Available all over the place, just google it. Also available as spray-on or roll-on dispursions.

Poly vinyl alchohol films are resistant to a great many other solvents and are used as mold releases for the composite business. They are great barrier films as well, so they are used to coat the inside of hydrogen storage tanks too.

Cheers,

Bloefeld

Sandeep Lokhande,

If water soluble/dissolvable plastic films/sheets are your interest, well the answer is yes.

For dry powders/materials handling and disposal after use polyvinyl alcohol films[which replaces traditional polyethylene films/covers] are applicable to enhance water solubility and disposal .Such films are commercially available.

Check the film of your friend for water solubilty and report.

I remember PE(Polyethylene) bags are recyclable, maybe it is that?

It's been around much longer than 2001.

In the '70/'80s we used plugs made from PVA to seal the scuttle holes in sonabouys deployed from the air.

After a few days in service, the plugs would melt, and the device would sink to the bottom of the ocean.

Electronic listening devices used to detect submarines, and other underwater noises, too, I guess. They were dropped from helicopters or planes in searching for "enemy" subs.

They were battery powered, so their life was rather short. We formulated the plug to last just a little longer than the batteries. Then it sank to the bottom.
