How to Protect Your Email Address Book

04/09/2009 7:45 PM

I received this message from my brother a few minutes ago:

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR ADDRESS BOOK!

I learned a computer trick today that's really ingenious in its simplicity. As you may know, when/if a worm virus gets into your computer it heads straight for your email address book, and sends itself to everyone in there, thus infecting all your friends and associates.
This trick won't keep the virus from getting into your computer, but it will stop it from using your address book to spread further, and it will alert you to the fact that the worm has gotten into your system.

Here's what you do:

First, open your address book and click on 'new contact,' just as you would do if you were adding a new friend to your list of email addresses.

In the window where you would type your friend's first name, type in 'A'.

For the screen name or email address, type ' AAAAAAA@AAA.AAA '.

Now, here's what you've done and why it works:

The 'name' 'A' will be placed at the top of your address book as entry#1.

This will be where the worm will start in an effort to send itself to all your friends.

But, when it tries to send itself to AAAAAAA@AAA.AAA , it will be undeliverable because of the phony email address you entered. If the first attempt fails (which it will because of the phony address), the worm goes no further and your friends will not be infected.

Here's the second great advantage of this method:

If an email cannot be delivered, you will be notified of this in your In Box almost immediately. Hence, if you ever get an email telling you that an email addressed to AAAAAAA@AAA.AAAA could not be delivered, you know right away that you have the worm virus in your system. You can then take steps to get rid of it!

Pretty slick huh?

If everybody you know does this then you need not ever worry about opening mail from friends.

Do you think it will work?

"Do you think it will work?"

Don't know, but I've just set it up - I'll let you know if it catches anything.

If nothing else, the bounce-back (if it ever happened) would at least let me know something was awry, but thanks for the link.

Sure...

You may find it incomprehensible but many people don't have any understanding of cyber-security. Realize this has not been taught in school unless one is involved in IT study for the most part.

These things run rampant through the Internet not because they're necessarily well written script. But because of the number of unprotected computers that exist. Many people believe the modem supplied by they're Internet provider is a protection mechanism. They read the brochure which proclaims free (anti-virus software) A/V and firewall available and that's all not understanding they need to activate a free trial then pay.

There are those whom do buy an A/V software suite, they run it as part the initial computer software installation but never run it again nor up date it. This in the land of bot-nets.

Do you want to protect your address book?

A few simple steps to reduce the opportunity of compromise:

1. Turning the computer off is the best firewall. Having a physical switch to disengage electrical power and the Internet.

2. Maintain sensitive data on an external mass storage device, a simple flash drive is sufficient for most address books. Don't insert them in public computers or a buddies computer, keep them safe and use in your computer only.

3. The average computer needn't have expensive security software installed, the determining factor is the type surfing environment. Children's sites are generally just as dangerous; in a cyber-security sense, as pornographic sites beware parents.

4. Anyone going online should have a firewall, A/V software set on a schedule for scans and updates often. Most can use the plethora of free software. Many for convenience find someone whom for a fee will insure these services are maintained allowing them peace of mind.

I doubt the worm will give up if it can't deliver one email.

For a start, it probably won't even know it was undeliverable, and even if it did, why would it stop there?

It sounds like wishful thinking and I don't think the worm makers are that naieve as to comply with their victim's wishful thinking.

Re: How to Protect Your Email Address Book

I have never used my address book for that exact reason. n any case most of my email corresponence (business) requires storing the email itself for later reference so why bother also entering the address elwhere.?

Last year when my computer got infected, my ISP informed me my computer had been found to send spam. Since my address book did not contain any adresses the malware evidently downloaded its own list. In today's world of harvesting email addresses, it doesn't take much to buy lists at low prices. The modern virus writers appear to be well funded. Having to buy a good list is not that expensive. The advice about a non functional address might have been valid back in 2001 but not today.

As a further protection I have informed all my friends who like to send round all those cutisie chain letters with HTML and animated images to STOP. They are simply cluttering up the internet and helping to make it easier for virus and trojans to get through. Now I just block anything that is not ASCII text. If they want to send an attachment, they can explain in ASCII what the attachment ia about.

Maybe if we got back to practicing safe internet intercourse we can reduce the problem.

I often work with my outlook address book. Couple days ago I added a new contact, but something happened. And all my contacts were lost no one knew how. Luckily I found out an unusual tool in the Internet - repair windows address book. The software performed my issue for a minute and quite fast.
