Pests and Panels

04/16/2009 10:54 PM

I m having problem of frequent tripping of panels in my unit because of creepers entering into the panels. Is there any measures to prevent these creepers from entering the panels. The path of entry have been sealed after identification.

Is there any spray sort of things which can prevent the creepers from going inside the panels??

Be these "creepers" flora or fauna, keep them out by sealing them off or killing them.

Lizards/geckos do not like to walk across petroleum jelly and the like (Vaseline or grease). This works to keep them off things like passive infra red alarm sensors so it might work for you - gets a bit messy though.

If lizards/geckos are getting into panels it indicates a panel construction problem. Panels have a nominal ingress protection rating, which is specified by considering the environment in which they are placed.

These animals cannot enter a panel rated IP44, for example. If the IP rating is lower than that, then the whole installation is vulnerable to water ingress, next.

So the animals are actually a prior warning that something more serious could be about to occur, and are highlighting the need to seal the panels better so as to restore the design IP rating.

the creepers are found dead inside the 11KV electrical panel after a sudden short circuit had occured. We still cant find out from where do they enter the panels.

At present i m not in state to send u the photo of the panels but it is of ABB make 11KV.Is there any spray sort of things to prevent these to enter the panels and make frequent tripping of the panels.

Hi,

At 11kV do not start spraying anything inside your panels as you are potentially compromising the efficiency of the insulation of the live parts. The consequences of this action are too dire to risk the experimentation! You are lucky that the fried lizards have not caused anything more serious than their own demise so far, as any life form capable of bridging between the conductors can result in a plasma arc with substantial damage to the equipment. You don't mention the type of switchgear used but the arc suppressant media will be involved in each of these nuisance trips and you should check that the condition of the media is still within operational limits.

Apart from their own death, the creepers, mainly lizards have also caused short circuit inside the panel which has led to tripping of the whole panel. We are having ABB SF6 CB.What is the way to get rid of the lizards. We have sealed every possible entrance for them. But still they can enter through the smallest possible path available.

The panels need to be sealed so no holes at all remain for lizard death walks.

This is a simplemsituation, turn off all power one night and place a torch inside and see where light exits.

You can also use the output of a vaccuum cleanet to give you a high volume low pressure air stream with which you pressurize the cabinet and then look for air leaks. Once holes found, an insulating sealng, like silicone, can plug the holes

Normally 11 kV Panels supplied by ABB/Siemens/AREWA are IP rated 52.These panels are dust and vermin proof.

The lizards might enter thro the cable gland holes from trenches if cabling has not been done properly.

Some times the door gaskets would have given away due to ageing ,may be you can check all door gaskets and replace it.

At times the operators do not close the doors properly .

I have also noticed in many installations the back covers not properly fitted after maintenance check.

Try a Capsaicin based creme used for joint pain. The higher the Scoville Units the better!

Just be careful to not get it on your eyes or thin skin areas!!!
