SO2 emission from diesel engine

04/21/2009 3:49 PM

Hello All.

Is it safe to assume that all sulfur in diesel fuel is emitted out exhaust as SO2 ?

Or is some emitted as other sulfur oxides?

I am just trying to find out the mass of SO2 in the exhaust if I know the percentage of sulfur in the fuel that is used...

Thanks.

Depending on your geography and the fuel type used the sulfur content can vary greatly going IN the tank.

Just wanted to say....

Lub oil contamination, there is plenty of information if you google it.

Hi Greg,

Knowing some chemistry, I would think that there could also be a significant amount of SO3 generated. I don't know combustion chemistry at all so I could be wrong. I would do a search along the lines: +diesel +combustion +"sulfur dioxide"

<...Or is some emitted as other sulfur oxides?...>

Well, apart from SO2 and SO3 there aren't many others!

Diesels produce H2O as a product of combustion, and run with excess O2 under anything but full load, so:

(2)SO2 + O2 + (2)H20 >> (2)H2S04

This spreadsheet is based on EPA's AP-42 emission factors and is used for Indiana air permits. To calculate, you take hp times 8760 hrs to get hp-hr/yr. Then, multiple hp-hr/yr times emission factor for SO2 (weight % sulfur times 0.00809) and divide by 2000. This will get you your tons per year of SO2 emissions.

Note that the PM10 emission factor in lb/hp-hr is not provided in the Supplement B update of AP-42.
An average conversion factor of 1hp-hr = 7,000Btu is provided below.

Methodology

Potential Througput (hp-hr/yr) = hp * 8760 hr/yr
Emission Factors are from AP 42 (Supplement B 10/96)Table 3.4-1 and Table 3.4-2
1 hp-hr = 7000 Btu, AP42 (Supplement B 10/96), Table 3.3-1, Footnote a.
Emission (tons/yr) = [Heat input rate (MMBtu/hr) x Emission Factor (lb/MMBtu)] * 8760 hr/yr / (2,000 lb/ton )
Emission (tons/yr) = [Potential Throughput (hp-hr/yr) x Emission Factor (lb/hp-hr)] / (2,000 lb/ton )
*No information was given regarding which method was used to determine the PM emission factor or whether condensable PM is included. The PM10 emission factor is filterable and condensable PM10 combined.icdsl600.xls 9/95
Note to Reviewer: Check the applicable rules and test methods for PM and PM10 when using the above emission factors to confirm that the correct factor is used (i.e., condensable included/not included).updated 4/99

That spreadsheet didn't exactly line up the way that it should. I can email it to you if it would help you.

AP-42 emission factors back in 1996 didn't account for ultra low sulfur in today's diesel. I believe it went from 5,000 ppm back in the 90's to 15 ppm today.
