Radiation Shielding

04/23/2009 6:25 PM

In 2012, the Suns poles will shift, sending a huge bolt of radiation into space.

In 1998 this bolt of ratiation missed us by a hair.

I believe it was in the 1700s when we had Telegraph wires strung out across the US and this Bolt of radiation from the sun fryed our wires.

If it hits us in 2012, ALL communications will go down.

We need Shielding for our cars and computers, lighting and signaling systems.

There is 2 years left as to when this event will happen.

Please let us know what kind of shielding for radiation you have available and what improvements are possible.

Thanks,

Screw the lights and cars, I want a shield for myself. Maybe I'll invest in a dozen or so rolls of aluminum foil and build a sweet suit to wear, And of course, I'll make a really cool tin foil hat to top it off.

But seriously, 2 years is nowhere enough time to shield all of the worlds infrastructure from solar radiation blast from outer-space.

It will be a great opportunity to work on my tan!

Samuel Morse built a demonstation telegraph system in 1843, not 1700's

In 1859 there was an incident where wires were fried by a "superflare" of high energy protons from the sun.

My question is: how did you find out that there will be a bolt of radiation in 2012?

may I suggest a backup of your critical data, on paper, or if paper is in jeopardy, maybe. a stone tablet..?? seeing as there's so much information around, you will have to decide, what's really worth keeping.

what?

what?

what?

There's no need to shield anything. When the solar storm hits the power grid the huge transformers that couple power to the grid will all be destroyed - 100,000's of thousands of them. At the current pace of wordlwide production - a few hundred a year, industrialized society will collapse (and you'll run out of gas, food and bullets) long before the grid is restored.

Don't worry, be happy.

Imagine a world without:

  • Mobile telephones
  • Satellite navigation
  • The internet (CR4 )
  • Television
  • Etc.

It will be just like 1950 again!

This reversal happens about every 11 years. The only question is how intense any ensuing radiation is and what effect that might have on us. There's nothing you can do about electric/electronic systems in a short time, so stockpile what you think you might need to get along without those. The personal risk is primarily to reproductive organs and bone marrow. You could, I suppose, wear shielded underpants or keep a shielding wrap handy at all times. I should suspect you'd have less than 10 minutes notice when this happens.

Some things are simply beyond our control. Best not to obsess about such things.

I think this calls for the old Yiddish saying,

"I'm an old man. I've seen lots of troubles. Most of them never happened."

tvp45 - Earth's poles don't reverse every 11 years! There is a cycle of sunspot minima and maxima that happens every 11 years maybe that is what you refer to?

Hurry! Change all communication transmission lines to optical fiber! Paint your houses and offices with aluminized paint! Turn off cell phones for a day or two!

The end is near, but what the hell. I've lived a happy life.
