Power Supply for Polysilicon Generator

04/26/2009 6:01 PM

My company was asked to design a power supply for polysilicon generator. Since power electronics is a core business for us, we are interested by this request.

Unfortunately, the potential customer who produces these generators doesn't test them until they are installed at their customers. We are talking about many MW of power for each generator. I am not going to produce a system (prototype) that can only be tested in the field, in a production setup. We are in the business of solving problems, not causing headaches to our customers.

I conducted some research on the net but didn't find enough technical info about the process to jump into it without testing a prototype first.

Does anybody have technical info about the type of electrical load and the control techniques used for this application? I understand that the resistance decreases rapidly with the temperature and build up of silicon but how critical is the temperature control? My potential customer doesn't seem to know. They normally buy them already made but their supplier is walking away from the business. I want to figure out a better way to make them before investing in this market.

see if their supplier is laying off staff, who used to make the polysilican generator. Hire them, and enter the business. since they have exited the biz = no conflicy. pick brains. It might have a high cost of entry, and a high risk of litigation and low margins as well as low and intermittent volume.

the client should have tech specs to show you? See if you can reverse-economics analyze why they exited?

Hi,

what conditions at poly-Si generation?

If from low density plasma then you may need to test at field installation.

Do you really think about poly-Si or UMG-Si?

They use the final rods for solar cells. I don't know the exact silicon type. My interest is more toward the type of load it presents to the power supply and the sensitivity of the controls required. There are many ways to control the power in a load. The cost varies greatly from one technique to the other. The trick is to choose the right one.

Hi, the type of load is very much depending on the process intended.

So first there has to be clarity which process.

(There is remelting: inductive plus resistive,

there is plasma deposition: complex capacitive but may be inductive if in one of the many plasma resonances, some resistive component existing: the deposition and precursor fragmentation will require energy).

I did a google search for "polysilicon generator" and this thread was the only real hit I got; so I guess I don't have to be embarrassed asking what you mean. Some kind of huge thermoelectric device?
