PCB Schematic for SMC-2 Allen Bradley Motor Controller

04/28/2009 1:37 AM

I have tried over the past few months to find information relevant to the Allen Bradley, Smart Motor Controller with the optional attached PCB interface. The model is the SMC-2 with an optional attached interface PCB.

I have tried at LINK.

Also have tried at LINK.

What I really would love to see is a schematic for the (optional) PCB legacy board

150-N, which would include the pin out wiring diagram for the ten pins located near the

DIP switch and how to provide power to the three powerblock gates,

while still using the 150-N PCB interface.

If that is unavailable, then anyone have the technical manual strictly for the SMC-2?

I basically have come close with some variants such as the SMC-3 module, but their wiring and pin diagrams are different.

Any coffee drinking people have any information on optional interface for the SMC-2 unit or able to help me out?

Cheers and thanks.

Have you tried e-mailing Rockwell/AB? They're usually pretty helpful (if sometimes a bit slow, as it can take them a while to find the right person to answer the question).

Yes, I have. Even joined the Rockwell forum to submit my question.

Another email is in the mill, as they may have lost the first one.

I also tried the head office down at Melbourne. Tech guy was interested in my application but has not contacted me again.

I figure the lack of information forth comming from Rockwell/Allen Bradley was due to the module being "legacy" and there is no $$$ in it for them and therefore I am a time waster, which is fair enough.

So I thought I might see here at CR4 if anyone has experience/knowledge with this unit.

Cheers

"... there is no $$$ in it for them ..." - that could be the problem, but even so, I've found they usually come up with the goods eventually (tho' they may need a bit of nagging). One guy actually phoned me from the States & we had about half an hour discussing a problem, which he agreed was best solved by me writing a bit of code rather than shelling out for another AB package (i.e. he wasn't doing the hard sell).

Sorry I can't help otherwise - I've only really dealt with their Micrologix PLCs (good docs), and the Guardmaster safety stuff (hopeless docs!).

Good luck,

John

yeah, thanks mate. Will be using the nagging approach. I hold great respect for A/B in general.

Your problem is going to be that the SMC-2 has been replace with the SMC-3. Rockwell is not known for remembering what they've made in the past.

But, give i think i can track something down for you...

lol...everything I need to know about the SMC-3 is indeed available.

Would be nice if you could come up with something meaty, thanks

Just being nosey really, but is this question anything to do with stepper motors?

I use an SMC800 in my CNC Router to control my 3 stepper motors......probably nothing to do with what you are asking.....

no stepper motor involvement. This is a three phase input that is phase controlled (via the attached PCB interface board) via high voltage/current thyristors that outputs controlled three phase for induction motors etc. Thanks anyways

I've got a 'Application and Product Guide' that includes the SMC2. Doesn't show pin out, but does show a wiring diag for the controls to the optional interface board. AB pub.150-5.1 Nov '94.

Also have a 'Installation Manual' for the SMC-Plus, bulletin 150. Doubt it would be of any help with your particular interests, but let me know if you'd like me to scan anything from either. AB pub 150-B13 Mar '96.

Re: PCB Schematic for SMC-2 Allen Bradley Motor Controller

yeah thanks. I have the SMC-Plus information...the PCB attached interface for the SMC-2 is very different to the Plus version. I also have the application guide that includes the SMC series and it also briefly adds a description of the DIP switch for the PCB interface on the SMC-2...but that is about as far as it goes.

I will take you up on the offer of the "Application and Product Guide".AB pub.150-5.1 Nov '94, as looking in my documents, I don't have the 150-5 publication.

I have the 150-1,2,3,4,6 and buggered how I couldn't get the 5th..

Hey, you wouldn't know how power gets to the PCB board to operate the gates on the thyristors?

I was thinking it may have fed from the three phase supply but not 100% certain. Cheers

Power to the interface option is thru a control xfmr. Pwr requirements for this interface option is 5VA at 120V and 15VA at 240V. There's an aux contact available on this board, 2.5A, 20-250V AC, 1A, 12-30V DC.

I've got access to two, pdfs for the SMC-2 manuals. These are the installation manuals. 5A, 9A, 16A pub 150-804, Oct '94 and 24, 35, 54, 68, 97A, pub 150-814, Jun '94.

Re: PCB Schematic for SMC-2 Allen Bradley Motor Controller

I was kinda fearing that there was an external power supply required to power the interface board which in turn will trigger the gates of the thyristors. Which is why I was looking previously for pinout information for the pin cluster that is on the optional board.

Guess I will have to get the magnifying glass out and start following some solder traces and look up some chip info to figure out which does what.

Thanks for that info, you have been a great help.

I am going to try and give you my email address so that you may send me the manual for the "24, 35, 54, 68, 97A, pub 150-814, Jun '94". I have the 97A model.

Thanks so much for your assistance regards this.

Yeah the only thing i can track down through Rockwell is the SMC-2 installation manual.

It's the same one bfmickl found, hope these help because if not, you might be up a certain creek without a paddle.

yeah true. Been down that creek many times

I practically downloaded all the docs from Rockwell awhile back, none had anything really relevant and one only lightly touched on the SMC-2.
