Dished Head Thickness Computations

04/29/2009 3:38 AM

Hi guys.

I have a problem with a tank that we fabricated. we used a 6mm blank for the dished heads. The maximum depth of the dish w/o the straight flange is only 8", the diameter of the dish is 72". I can't find a formula to compute or estimate the thickness of the crown after forming. Can someone help me on this one?

Another thing, I would like to know if there are other formulas that I can use to determine the maximum allowable pressure for the head that I have fabricated other than what is provided by ASME.

Thanks in advance!

Is it a tank with an open top, or is it a pressure vessel? The two paragraphs conflict.

Its a pressure vessel. the estimated operating pressure is 60 PSI. Its actually a filter tank.

With that shallow of a head - you are not going to get much thinning at all. I don't have access to my literature right now, but will try to dig it up later on.

Have you looked into Appendix 1-4 of ASME VIII Div.1? It provides alternate rules for various diameter/depth combinations for torispherical heads.
