Multiple Boiler Powerplant

04/29/2009 7:07 PM

Is it practical to install two coal-fired fluidized bed boilers to run a single 30 MW turbine? Please comment based on both technical and economic aspect of the set-up.

Yes, it is, and the forum can't see the figures.

I am only fishing for a qualitative answer. What I wanted to see is how it would be that two boilers would react to swings in steam demand of one turbine as controlled by the turbine speed governor.

Technically ok if they are dimensioned accordingly. You could think about a system that allows feeding turbine from one, from another or from both to allow for maximum power, or maintenance, or emergency contingency, using directional valves and a monitoring system.

However, it is going to cost more to install and operate, because it clearly seems that two separate units will have an overall eficiency lower than a single bigger unit.

If partial operation is desired, maybe that reduction in work cycle pays for it. Maybe a reduction in the bigger unit is even better. And maybe, for safety and dependability, you must do it anyway.

No for multible reasons of operation of 2 both boilers at same level. hence I'd go for one boiler + another of same capacity as standby irrespective of the cost involved when I take into consideration of 30 MW power generation day in day out.

Some of the considerations - load, steps in load, reliability, efficieincy at the loads, steam turbine drive load vs the steam load, alternate fuels required ? / available ?, steam condensing capacity, i.e. do you want two boilers 50-50 or 70-30 capacity to best follow load, ...

A powerplant we had was a natural gas fired turbine with supplemental duct firing to double the steam output as needed, the boiler output went into a back pressure steam turbine and the output into the mill. The hot air from the boiler also went into the mill.

Dear Mr.kumskip

Yes. It can be connected. As for as possible, the Boiler should be identical in all respect. However the main considerations are the Final Outlet pressure, Steam Temp., the Pressure Drop in Super Heater, and Firing Rate.

Operation wise in terms of Thermo Dynamic Efficiency, Radiation Losses etc. it is better to have ONLY ONE BOILER of proper capacity.

Cost Wise one bigger size boiler of Full capacity will be slightly less than 2 boilers of Half Capacity.
