Do you mean Fluorescents?

Fluorescents are to be given intact to Hazardous Wastes Disposal experts, along with their ballasts, due to a number of elements. Mercury and PCBs in either the tubes or the ballasts are the concerns.p] The regular guy at the Hazardous Waste Disposal Center where I went with ballasts, and paint, and fluorescent tubes, or drill gun batteries had signs of dioxin poisoning on his face.

Rule of thumb is try not to break things whether they are working or not.

Personally, I've always been fond of disposing anything toxic by directly inserting it into the lava stream of an active volcano. There's already so many natural toxic things happening, that the tiny bit of man-made pollutant just pales in comparison.

But not everyone has a lava flow so readily available. Check with your local authorities. If you don't know who they are you can check Google or go pre-internet and check your local library.
