The Telectroscope

04/30/2009 12:52 PM

The Telectroscope allows viewing of New York City from London England, and vice versa. It was built in both cities as a celebration of the 125th Anniversary of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Perhaps some CR4 participants, who specialize in optics and quantum electrodynamics, would care to explain the inner workings of the mysterious device?

Simple...

- Install 2 cams and 2 video terminals connected to each other via a broadband connections.

- Make a nice gold dome with retro style in a nice place.

- Put some marketing on saying that you digged a tunnel under oceans bottom or maybe that you installed mirrors in the space someway and all that stuff...

- Enjoy.

Come on, be serious, earth curve does not allow direct viewing between the cities.

But it's a really cool idea anyway and must be encouraged.

Hi Chris,

That IS really how it works (check WIKI). I just don't see how the builders could get away with lying (OK - maybe a PR spin) about how it works though.

By looking closely at the pictures, it looks like someone has a nice copy of Bryce and Photoshop... So, like, not!!!

By the camera that appears in the pictures of the stuff, its a digicam. And it seems to have a magnifying mirror to display the image. I was not able to find any technical description of the system.

All right, it was just to discract you poor men... Actually, it's an example of how hyperspace portals work. The glass you can see in the pictures is just to avoid people using it due to custom's restrictions between coutries... no duty free around...

... and you know there was an old Sci-Fi story called "Macroscope" by Piers Anthony which was similar in concept. That's really what struck me about this one. You could see details on remote planets...

Huumm, I just checked my version of the Telectroscope. At 12:45 est. USA, the tide is out in Wellfleet MA, and there is a big ugly catamaran cruise ship transiting the Panama canal at the Miraflores Lock. I tried the one for the Brooklyn Bridge but it's not loading at present.

It's fun to take a look at webcams of where you want to visit, and many places are obliging. I'm dissappointed that the view of one of the most beautiful bridges in the world is seen through a peephole.

Thanks Chris. I was just commenting on the Telectroscope view. "You would think" (all after that quote is unlikely) that they could do a better job of it.
