Bucket and rope.

  • Tie rope onto bucket handle.
  • Put slurry in bucket.
  • Hold bucket by rope.
  • Spin around really, really fast until separation occurs

~Cordless Drill, most have two speeds.

~Or a rope, tie your specimen to the end and "Ye Haw Cowboy" pretend you are about to lasso a filly.

~Tie the specimen to your dogs tail, let him go!

BTW the blender is a good Idea!

The Red Green approach:

If you don't already have a box fan, they're generally cheap, less than $10. Cheaper still, if your neighbors leave theirs sitting out on their porch, or in an unlocked shed.

Remove the screws holding on the front grille. Then use the handyman's secret weapon, and duct tape your test tubes, or whatever you want to centrifuge, to the fan blades. If the grille can go back on, go ahead and put it on. It's not really necessary, but if there is an accident, you can reduce the size of the resulting mess!

Plug 'er in, turn 'er on, set the speed, and let 'er do 'er thing for as long as needed. If you don't know how long to let it run, just go get yerself a cuppa coffee, return that call to your bail bondsman, or do one of those short projects you've been puttin' off for the last 6 months to 2 years. Or just sit there and watch it until you think it oughta be done. That way, if your wife comes around asking you to do some useless chore, such as fixing the washing machine or pumping out the basement, you can tell her that you gotta stay there and watch this thing for another 10 to 20 minutes. That'll give you enough time to think of another excuse to not do what she wants.

When the time comes, turn 'er off - the fan, not your wife (she's probably allready turned off anyway) - and let her slow down to a stop naturally. (Now I'm talking about both the fan and your wife.)

And remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

What you need:

1. 1 piece of 24" Sch 80 steel pipe x approx 12", cut square

2. 4 pieces 1/2"x36"x48", 1 piece 1/2"x49"x48.5" and 1 piece of 2"x48"x48" mild steel plate and about 15 pounds of 7018 welding rod with welder

3. 1 used but functional 24", 2 cycle lawn mower with extra blade

4. A pair of stout hinges

5. Running shoes

First of all, give the wife an all day gift certificate at a beauty spa that's at least 60 miles away.

Take the push handle and wheels off of the mower and discard. Modify the fuel tank so that the fuel line is tapped into the outside surface of the tank,( I'll leave the methodology of this up to you, but if you're a do it yourself-er, as you seem, this should present no problem). Make a small air scoop (1/4 of a plastic mineral water bottle, drawn and quartered of course) and duct tape (I know you have it) the scoop to the carburetor intake facing opposite the direction of engine rotation. Add the second (spare) blade atop and 90 degrees to the existing one.

Now, have the delivery truck drop the plate where you want your centrifuge to be, permanently, because it will weigh about 1,300 pounds and it is unlikely that you will have a fork lift available at home to move it about. Weld (double continuous) the pipe (on end) in the center of the plate. Place the mower on the pipe so the blade tips are resting on the pipe circumference. Weld the blade tips to the pipe. (You may have to get someone who is good with mirror welding for this one.) Make sure these welds are sound (you could even dye-pen test ) as they are key to the operation of this mechanism.

Once the mower is in place, weld the 1/2"x36"x48" plates around the perimeter of the 2" plate and weld the edges together thus creating a box. (Stitch sequence of 2 over 4 will suffice, but do it inside and out to be safe. Weld one leaf of each hinge on the 48.5" edge of the larger 1/2" plate. Put plate atop of your steel box and weld the other halves of the hinges to the side. Open the top of your now lidded box.

Arrange and secure whatever it is you want to centrifuge (lord knows) around the mower deck and secure. Put on running shoes. Have the two friends who have been watching you all day, hold the lid of the box up at 90 degrees with their free hands, (because, surely, their other hands are holding one of the many beers that they have been dragging out of your fridge since they arrived in the morning) They will have a tough time holding the 320 pound lid open with one hand so be careful when you lean in to pull start the mower.

At this point, you will figure out what the running shoes are for. Your friends, well, they'll be the source of the legend that will follow you for life and well after. Your wife, well, she'll feel so great when she gets home that it will take her at least a day before she asks about the new planter in the back garden and says that she wants it moved to the other side of the patio.

And that's how to make a centrifuge from household items.
