Browser Battles: IE 8 vs. Firefox

05/06/2009 3:21 AM

I am currently running Firefox on Windows XP and on a ASUS EEE7 Linux laptop as well. (mine is rather a chest-top because I use it in bed)

I have one problem though. When I do a long e-mail and get interrupted the editor times out and my typing disappear without a trace where it can be recovered. It disappear even while I am typing.

So far I could not find a place where I can change a setting to rectify the unacceptable behaviour.

For some time now I am offered on boot-up to download and install IE8 which I so far have resisted.

Can anyone tell me how to remove the timeout in Firefox?

Can any one recommend IE8?

I'd keep the binders on IE8 for a while yet.

I use Abiword then copy and paste to the browser.

To run Firefox in safe mode, right-click the shortcut icon you use to start Firefox and select Properties. Add a space and -safe-mode to the end of the Target line and click OK. Then click the shortcut icon to start Firefox. It will run using the default theme and no addons.

Example: "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -safe-mode

After you've finished troubleshooting, remove -safe-mode to set the shortcut back to normal.

That is a horrible problem. If it is due to a connection timeout then maybe disabling IPV6 or equivalent would help, as discussed here. If not, try this article for about:config tips on how to find that elusive setting you need to change.

I admit I've never had this problem, but like bwire, if I have a long one to write I usually work on it in a text editor, instead of online, then cut and paste it in.

Can't say anything about IE8. Firefox is working fine for me in Ubuntu linux.

I am not quite sure such timeouts are browser-specific. In fact I've had several time-outs happen in IE (former versions). Like everybody else, I've been copy-pasting long texts into browser fields eversince. Better safe than sorry.

On a lighter note: BTW, as software battles go, this one is I think forever lost for IE despite the crappy MS start-up marketing! Don't you yield, man! (My XP desktop keeps asking on startup for permission to check my setup for pirated software... What insolence!... I think I'll just go reformat c: in a pointless display of power!)

I was sure my reply started out as on-topic before I shifted to MS-hate-mode... I'll give it 5 marks for off-topic, but this won't show in your browser unless you're using IE (any version).... p-x

Download "Delete_WGA.exe."

This will remove the dreaded Windows Genuime Advantage crap from your machine - I had this same problem.

Also turn off Automatic Updates

Linux users are geekin' out all over this thread!

<*ahem*>I am one too...

Never had the timing out problem...I use gmail and it has an automatic draft save every few minutes. Why not configure thunderbird or something??? It's light-weight enough to run on these little netbooks (my wife as a Acer One) and gets the job done.

The question is, should you talk about your better half in this manner???

I had or have the same peoblem with a really old version of netscape, 7.XX

what i did was a not so much a cure,, but a way to protect myself for yes I had that happen too you would be making a LONG e mail and suddenly it's gone!

What I started doing is at each paragraph break or whenever i think about it I tell it to save as a draft.

This does save it as a draft and if when it dissappears I look in the draft folder and at least where i saved it last time was is there and continue on.

I have the same setup (XP & Firefox). The most annoying thing to me is that when using the slide button on the right side of the screen to scroll down the page, the cursor seems to "loose its grip" on the slide. I know it is a small thing, but it has been an annoyance for many months. Has anyone else experienced this?

No, it is a wired mouse. I think that a process going on in the background is causing it.

Go to control panel and check mouse configuration settings, maybe slow it down a bit to stabilize. Or clean the mouse.

It is a laser mouse, therefore cleaning is not applicable- but slowing down the mouse in Settings sounds like a great idea. -Thanks!
