460-V Motor and 480-V Power Supply

05/08/2009 4:21 AM

Dear all,

can anybody explain why motor rating written 460 Volt, meanwhile power supply is

480 V ?? should we always use tap changer transformer and decrease the voltage of

our power supply ?

thank you

Re: 460V Motor supplied by 480 V Power Supply ??

(480V-460V)/480V ≈ 4%

This fluctuation is to be expected. Nothing to worry about.

PW's right.

Like Michael Keaton said in Mr. Mom, "220, 221, whatever it takes.

There are 2 separate voltage "standards" in the US; Distribution Voltage and utilization Voltage (also nown as Equipment Voltage).

208, 240, 480 etc. is the Distribution Voltage, what the power utilities supply.

200, 230, 460 etc. is the Utiliation Voltage for equipment. The reason it is lower is that it allows for some voltage drop from the utility transformer to the motor windings. utilization voltages for motors are typically supposed to be at least +-10%. But that is a North American standard and other countries do not always understand this, especially low cost suppliers, so it is wise to be vigilant of what a manufacturer states. For example, I have seen where some low cost IEC devices are "rated" for 440V, because they are really designed for 400V +- 10% and 400 +10% = 440. But that is 440 + 0%!

motor power supply voltage is mentioned as 460, means its the maximum voltage under fluctuation the motor can operate normally, if percentage fluctuation is not mentioned.

say 10%.fluctuation

if mentioned, than motor can operate within +-10 % fluctuatuation voltage w.r.t 460 volts.

some times its 460v-480v mentioned, means motor can operate efficiently within this range of supply voltage.

now see your supply voltage.

thanks.

Hi elect-ok,

As per Indian Standards 10% variation in supply is acceptable for design consideration of the motors.
