Registry Problem with isis.exe

05/16/2009 1:16 AM

Hi All

I am running a program called Picaxe VSM from Lab Center Electronics. The program won't save any changed settings, such as new paths for library etc.

I've contacted both the supplier and Lab Center who say the problem is my registry and the inability of isis.exe to write to it (isn't it aways someone else's fault!). I used a registry cleaner that fixed 1,482 problems (so it told me), but not this one.

Any new directions would be appreciated.

Tony

If the issue is write permissions for isis.exe in regards to the registry, your solution is to open REGEDT32 from the run line (Start => Run): REGEDIT will not allow you to do what you need...

With REGEDT32 open, perform a search for isis.exe. When found, RIGHT click and select permissions from the resulting menu. All permissions can be adjusted from within this window.

***WARNING*** Editing your system registry may cause unexpected issues with your computer, up to and including failure to boot / load Windows. Before editing your registry, it is STRONGLY suggested that you backup your registry in it's entirety.

Thanks poppaman2

I've located permissions in isis.exe in the registry as you instructed, but I'm confused as to who should have permission and quite what "Advanced" does.

Make sure that the account which is accessing the program in question (isis.exe) is allowed full control: if the account is not granted full control on the main screen, "advanced" will allow you to adjust.

Also, look at the "owner" tab and change to the account accessing (if not already set that way). don't reset the "inherit permissions" - keep them as set.

If this does not work, try what was suggested in the last post: disconnect from the Internet, disable A/V and Spybot and see if you still receive the error. If you do, depending upon what version of which program you are using (I don't remember what you stated was installed), you may want to block scanning of the directory in which isis.exe is located.

If this does not reslove the issue, I would first perfrom what Microsoft calls an "in place upgrade" (reinstallation without wiping the operating system): if this does not work, a "nuke and pave" (format the hard drive and re-install) should be performed...

Run your registry cleaner again and again until you are under 50 hits (for XP at least).

What Windows are you running?

Thanks everone for your help

I have XP Professional and install all updates, also avast! antivirus, run Spybot once a month and defrag. I have a registry cleaner RegistryBooster which now records 10 errors mostly regarding help for my CAD program. I've run that several times, but it hasn't fixed the error.

Did you try the suggestions in post #1? If yes, then I personally feel that a new install is needed, it will probably take less time than further fiddling about.......even though the "right" fiddle may just fix the problem.

By the way, is it possible that you have some sort of "anti virus" protection, that is "(over) protecting" the registry?

In such cases what I do is first pull the online cable out so that I am physically seperated from the internet. Then I shutdown all the antivirs stuff completely and try again......SpyBot sometimes causes such problems, but it is not alone either......make sure that you are not running such a process in the background for example......
