Single-Phase Motor and Three-Phase Generator

05/22/2009 6:53 AM

i am trying to power an irrigation pump but all i have is a 3 phase 240v generator and the motor on the pump is 115/230v single phase and i don't want to burn something up is there a safe way to wire it together?

Re: can i run a single phase motor off of a 3 phase generator?

Sure. Connect the motor to two of the legs of the three-phase service. It's always a good idea to put a meter across the two legs first to ensure that the voltage is within specifications. The extra ten-volts should not be a problem. Also, jog the motor for the first time and check for the correct direction of rotation. If the motor runs backwards, reverse the connection by swapping the two motor leads.

A single phase motor usually has a start capacitor and a start winding, which drop out-of-circuit as the motor runs up to speed. Reversing the power inlet connection on a single phase motor will not usually affect its direction of rotation.

That's right. Sorry. I'm used to working with three-phase motors and it just slipped my mind!

If phase-to-phase is 240V, then simply connect the 230V windings of the pump motor to two of the phases.

Remember that, if the pump isn't double-insulated, then a solid earth connection is needed. Earth the neutral point on the generator and, preferably and if available, feed the pump via a residual current trip device set to 30mA.

Hi you can run a 3 phase motor off single phase. Use one phase and the earth or the star point of the transformer. It can also be done with two windings in parallel and the other winding also in pararell with a capacitor in series. But this second method I have not done for at least 30 years. Regards Thermo.

As I understand it you have 240 coming in that is three legs out of phase of 110v ac. I had a machine shop, I wired everything myself and the fuse panel would have these alternating phases 1,2,3... 1,2,3 etc. I would just put in a three phase circuit breaker and it would connect to three legs of 110v ac current. In that case swap two wires if the motor ran in the wrong direction to reverse it, that is 3 phase, that doesn't work on any phase other than 3 phase. To run computers, the office, lights and 110 outlets just put a single phase circuit breaker in the panel and run a neutral. A single phase circuit breaker only taps one phase of the three phases on the pannel. Some things in the home draw on two legs of 110v Ac like an electric stove for that there is a circuit breaker that taps into to legs of the 110v on the three phases on the pannel.

Match the correct wire with the correct circuit breaker amps, be sure to ground everthing and you can test the current coming in with a voltage meter. I think it was a 15 amp breaker for 14 gage, 20 amp breaker for 10 gage and so on. Check with electrical supplier to make sure. I don't know why 240v 3 phase is'nt called 3 legs of 110 or why 220v house current isn't just called 2 legs of 110v?
