Two SATA Drives in the Same Computer

05/27/2009 12:50 AM

Hi to all

Is it possible to have two SATA drives in the same computer ,one as master and the other as slave as the case with PATA (IDE)drives ?

If so ,what would be the jumper pins setting?
Thanks for help

You need to move some jumpers but I am not going to open my case for you.

It would be best to look at the settings on the back or end of the drive.

I am running a third (external) SATA via the USB and also use it in my laptop as the second drive.

The SATA drives each need their own SATA connector/port, there is no such thing as a SATA cable connecting two (or more) drives.

Most motherboards have two or more (often 4 or 6) SATA connectors, allowing multiple drives. I have one computer with two SATA drives, and another which has ports for 6. which it may have some day.

It's my understanding that there is no master/slave with SATA. They are all masters and you can have one drive per SATA connector on your motherboard. Most new motherboards come with 4 SATA connectors so you can have 4 SATA drives. Older motherboards might only have 1 SATA connector and 1 IDE. In that case you can only have 1 SATA drive. Unless you want to get an external case and use a USB port as has been suggested.

There are no SATA jumpers in any standard PCs that I have ever seen. All SATA drives have their own individual SATA cable and port on the mother board. You just need a spare power lead from your power supply, a spare SATA port on your mother board, and a SATA cable, normally provided with the new hard drive.

Regards.

It all depends on your MB that how many it supports.

MB in my system supports 4 as it has 4 ports [connectors].

Though I have only one but have tried on all the connectors one by one.

If you see in BIOS it shows 0, 1. 2. & 3.

I also have an (PATA, BIOS calls it like it) [ATA] which becomes master if the SATA is on other than 0.

I can boot from SATA or ATA by shifting the SATA from 0 to any of other than 0.

Try if you have ..

Have a day !!!!!

My Mac Pro has 4 1TB SATA drives internal and 4 1TB SATA drives in an external drive bay. Too bad I still need Windows machines.
