What are These Things? Some Kind of Brackets?

05/27/2009 9:05 AM

I found these in my lab and no one knows what they are or what they are used for. I'm guessing some kind of brackets. But for what? Thanks for the help.

My dad used to have a couple of these things in his darkroom (which tells you that it must have been a looong time ago. I was still a kid back then). I never knew what they were for but I'm guessing that they have something to do with film-type photography.

Vulcan

Won't advise using them to develop films...

Right.

Wait! The box says "Staples" and the other box says "Copy Paper". Problem solved?

They're used on optical breadboards. The long black things hold the rods in place. The top of the rods are designed to hold different optical devices - lens holders, beam splitters, etc.

I'm not sure, but they could be Mealer rods, useful for solving all problems with their new (but deliberately unspecified) technology.

Looks like the slide adjusters used on my old drafting table to adjust the angle of the board. You remember when we used pencil and triangles to make drawings for parts before mouse and screen?

Pencil?

Triangle?

what are you talking about??? This isn't an ancient history blog!

the fine print: I still have my ink pens from way back when....

Those parts look like they go together as an adjustable assembly with the rods going through the machined piece and probably locked with the screw/nuts. I'm guessing that the optical breadboard parts is correct.
