Usually used for balancing hot/chilled water systems.

We does not have clear picture regarding your By Pass Valve.

If I am not mistaken, I do believed that, your By Pass Valve is for piping.

If so, the actual usage of the by pass valve is to by pass the flow, in case if you need to do some repair at the main valve.

For example in the water filters system,

I do not know if you had see a water filter system before. In this water filter system, the inlet pipe is connected to a TEE and a inlet valve before to the water filter inlet.

At the outlet of the water filter, it also connected to a outlet valve and a TEE and the final pipeline will be to your machine or your consumption.

So,.. At both TEE it will be connected to a valve call the By Pass Valve.

The function of this By Pass Valve is for you to by pass the water flow, without going thru the filters while you can dismantle out the water filters for services, repair or whatever thing you want to do with it.

Most of the By Pass Valve is use for emergency by pass, in case there is a need for some emergency repair need to be carry out on the spot.

You mean by-pass of a Pressure Reducing valve or Temperature Controlling Valve? This is done with 3 Valves to isolate the PRV /TCV to take it off the line for repairs in event of malfunction. Similar done for steam traps.

The bypass is used when the valve needs to be maintained and the fluid flow must continue . The bypass should a manual or automatic control .

On page 3 of this site:

http://www.ejprescott.com/products/ValvesTap/LargeDiameterDiscValves.pdf

They show large diameter Gate Valves with a Bypass from the upstream side to the downstream side. This Bypass is required because there is too much pressure on the disc when the valve in closed and It cannot be opened. The Bypass bleeds the flow thus the pressure from the upstream side and allow the Valve to be opened.

Is this what you are asking about?
