Some snakes are pretty smart

05/30/2009 1:38 AM

Once, while hunting rattlesnakes, I happened upon a baby blue racer about 6" long. Thinking it might make an interesting pet, I grabbed it and took it home. Since I didn't have a herpetarium to place the snake into for the overnight, I instead found a round bottle about 2" in diameter and about 8" high. I reasoned that the bottle would be suitable, since it was taller than the snake was long, and figured the young racer hadn't yet learned how to jump.

Come morning, when I checked the bottle, I discovered that it was empty. So, I called to my young sons to see if they had let the snake out of the bottle to play with it. They all denied having done so, so we set about searching the house for the snake, and soon found it hiding under a sofa. I still didn't believe that the snake had gotten itself out of the bottle, so I placed it back in to see what it would do. It immediately showed me how it got out. So, how did it do it?

Hey, nice story..
I'd guess it spiralled up the inside exerting enough outward pressure to grip the inside of the bottle.

You got it. Mountain climbers call it being able to chimney, but I had no idea snakes could also do it, until I saw it with my own eyes. The little baby blue made it look too easy. I kept the snake for most of the summer, feeding him garden slugs to satisfy his appetite, then released him back to wild.

Coiled its self up at the bottom, head to the middle, and uncoiled like a spring out through the top.

Lessons learned - Don't put a snake in a Viagra bottle -they will rise to the occasion (beyond expectations).

I give up how did it get out?

Most likely you have already replied.

But do they put the bottle with small kids around?

And also will the severed snake be druggable?

Climbed as far as he could, then rocked himself across the width of the bottle till it falls over. Then slithers right on down the road.

Reminds me when in Malawi, late 60's. A green mamba was rearing in the Limbe Club carpark, hood spread.

Being interested I watched as one of the golfers (no greens, only sand) 'dispatched' it with a number two iron.

I picked it up and put it in the boot of my austin cooper, intending to do a bit of research on it later. Never did find it.

Many years ago fellow had a pet carpet snake. At night it used to sleep in the car.

One night someone pinched the car. 2 miles down the road the car was found, in the middle of the road, drivers door open, ignition still shorted on and out of petrol!

Snake was quite content under the drivers seat.

We used to have a dump truck driver that liked to collect snakes he found on the job. One night he forgot the bag with the day's collected snake in the cab on the truck. The next morning the truck was still in the gas up line, engine running. The gas man that worked at night refused to refuel that truck for a long time.
