Disconnecting means for 3phase 4 wire system

06/04/2009 9:58 AM

Should neutral be disconnected in a disconnect switch along with 3 phase wires using a 4-pole disconnect switch or a 3-pole-Disconnect Switch with a neutral link would be OK? Any comments?

It really depends on where the site is. What country (and state if applicable) are you in as the electrical wiring rules and regulations differ between countries (and sometimes even states within said country), as do electrical neutral and earthing schemes, use of neutral links, etc.

Do you have access to your local electrical wiring standards and regulations, as the rules with regard to switching the neutral in that specific country are clearly explained in these?

Unless you need to totally isolate the piece of equipment from the electrical system (sensitive equipment that reacts to feedback voltages through the neutral, isolated ground and neutral connections, etc.), there is really no need to break the neutral load from the equipment.

Or as stated, it is required by the jurisdiction having authority.
