They use energy going up, but not when coming down.

The counterweight should weigh slightly more than the cage, so that the minimum amount of energy is used both up and down.

D'oh! Good point. I was actually being sarcastic, but you are correct if it is a traction elevator. Hydraulic elevators however only use the energy consumed by the little hydraulic valve when descending.

Look at the motor power and add some more % for control consumption. Actually the drive applied in a lift have some different phases of operations (motor, brake, generator)
