Coating to Protect Mild Steel from Vinegar

06/12/2009 4:26 AM

Gents,

I have a machine mounted on a mildsteel base in a vinegar factory. Any idea what paint/coating will protect the frame?

In addition to the above, stop the leaks.

I would suggest priming the base with a metal etching primer or washing it down with a phosphoric acid paint prep available at most paint stores. Then finishing with an epoxy or urethane based paint. Lacquer and enamel paints will also work but not quite as well.

Fortunately vinegar is a relatively mild corrosive with about 5% acid typically and just about any epoxy paint or urethane paint is more than adequate protection as long as the surface is prepped well before applying. The reason for the metal etching paint or phosphoric acid wash is that it has phosphoric acid will turn any iron oxide (rust) to iron phosphate and stop any corrosion which might be getting started.

The big thing is to get a good seal on top of the metal and most non water based paints will provide this.
