Peening is the process of working a metal's surface to improve its material properties, usually by mechanical means such as hammer blows or by blasting with shot (shot peening). Peening is normally a cold work process (laser peening being a notable exception). It tends to expand the surface of the cold metal, thereby inducing compressive stresses or relieving tensile stresses already present. Peening can also encourage strain hardening of the surface metal.

Easy to figure out. Get a ball peen hammer and a cross peen hammer. Then get a piece of sheet brass and start pounding. Within 15 minutes, you'll know this for life.

That's my personal best time.

Finding hammer....1 minute

Replacing broken handle....3 minutes

Finding band-aid for splinter from new handle....2 minutes

Finding hammer after throwing it when it's discovered handle is backwards...3 minutes

Reversing handle...3 minutes

Opening beer to calm jangled nerves...1 minute

Finding another band-aid for cut from pop-top..1 minute

Peening...1 minute

In a pinch, I can always just cauterize the wound with the propane torch but my wife complains about the smell when I do that.

That's a thought! Aren't some steel drums peened? Dunno, never played one, but think I saw something that looked like that.

Don't really know myself, but I believe the tuned facets are (or were originally) made by hammering the steel into shape - I guess that the resulting surfaces would qualify as having been 'peened'(?).

the meaning of peening .. from the hammersmith perspective, the peen is on the back end of your flat hammerhead.

Peens can be round or pointed and come in various shapes that dent deeper into the metal than the flat head on the other end. The peen is good for making rounded shapes like cups or bells out of a flat sheet. The flat hammer is for planishing, that's a light hammering that flattens and smooths the surface or the shape.
