Thermodynamics Trumps Fantasy

07/06/2009 9:15 AM

Apparently there's always someone at it:

http://i-r-squared.blogspot.com/2009/07/thermodynamics-wins-again.html

"Back in 2006, the Irish company Steorn announced that they had discovered a "a technology that produces free, clean and constant energy." A magnetism-based perpetual motion machine is what it amounted to, which would clearly violate various physical laws, such as the First and Second Law of Thermodynamics. Steorn put an advertisement in the Economist after announcing their new technology, seeking qualified experts to form a "jury" to validate their claims.

The jury is in. The laws of science do not fall so easily..."

As P.T. Barnum once said, "There's a sucker born every minute".

While some sources claim the quote is most likely from famous con-man Joseph ("Paper Collar Joe") Bessimer, it was actually uttered by David Hannum, spoken in reference to Barnum's part in the Cardiff Giant hoax. Hannum, who was exhibiting the "original" giant and had unsuccessfully sued Barnum for exhibiting a copy and claiming it was the original, was referring to the crowds continuing to pay to see Barnum's exhibit even after both it and the original had been proven to be fakes.

In turn, Barnum's fellow circus owner and arch-rival Adam Forepaugh attributed the quote to Barnum in a newspaper interview in an attempt to discredit him. However, Barnum never denied making the quote. It is said that he thanked Forepaugh for the free publicity he had given him.

Production of useful work is limited by the laws of thermodynamics, but the production of useless work seems to be unlimited.

But the best part of the whole episode:

"Undeterred, Steorn rejected science and announced that they would proceed toward licensing their technology by the end of 2009. No joke."

I have been following Steorn since the beginning. They had an interesting idea - letting the Scientific community test and prove their design. I don't quite know what they thought they would accomplish when they proved it was all a scam (yes it was, and a very transparent one).

Their original website history of how the device was "accidentally" invented one day when they were building a motor which accidentally powered itself was quite humorous and classic "Pseudoscience" (and based on a number of previously disproven free energy and overunity designs and flawed concepts), especially since they couldn't even repeat the result with years of development and people viewing it. Unfortunately they took it off shortly after they posted it to make themselves appear more credible (I believe).

If you visit their site you will find this latest news article

Ok the jokes over scammers, it isn't funny anymore.

Scam?

Yea right, I've already bought 3 orbos. Now I just need to figure out what it does and how to use it.

But they've recreated an accurate model of evolution theory

Here's another take on it, albeit a more insidious venue...........

Discipation indeed...

Intelligent design is at best synergism of creationism and evolution theory. An idea which I can not up with put.

Creationism may be defined as an intelligent design culminating a big bang

"The limit to this new technology is theoretical, limited by the laws of physics and by the principles of the conservation of energy." -Sean McCarthy, CEO Steorn
Talk about truth in advertising, the problem is that many potential victims know nothing about the laws of physics.
