Suitable Cleaner for Aluminum Alloy (6061)

07/13/2009 10:54 PM

Here is a quick question. What can be used to 'clean' salt corrosion from 6061 alloy aluminum?

My son works in a metal shop - and today his boss handed him muriatic acid to clean a (salt water) swimming pool grill.

Tristan (my son) thought this was a bad idea. I agree.

however - neither one of us had the alternative proposal at that moment.

Help!

ps.. yesssss...we know 6061 is NOT the right alloy for a salt water swimming pool grill - because the metal is already pitting after only a couple of months. the object here is to clean the metal and to coat it with something....AGAIN....ideas are needed for a suitable coating too!

I was thinking about a fancy silicone based ship's-bottom paint - but would love to know how to prime for THAT!

How about an automotive wheel polish, eg -

they are doing that for the areas that can be physically polished - but the grill material is punched 1/8" plate - so the (numerous) edges will be difficult to address.

I am looking for a dip cleaner that can be washed off after it has done it's thing

For a coating, perhaps ask Tristan's boss if he can anodize it. Still, you'll need to clean it first - light abrasion with 'brasso' or 'scotch-brite' is usually pretty good to get rid of pitting.

anodizing is a good option.. what do the anodizing shops use to prep the aluminum?

I think in your case, after the grill was scoured and cleaned, they'd use a basic (as in pH) solvent like sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to prime it. I've never actually performed an anodizing process myself, I've only had anodizing work outsourced - so unfortunately thats the extent of my knowledge on the topic. I think your best bet is to ask a worker from a fabrication shop to give you some advice. Bear in mind that if the grill needs welding back in place, anodizing might not be your solution - it has the propensity to crack when subjected to thermal stress.

Hope I've been helpful to you

I believe that caustic soda (NaOH) will disolve the aluminum.

It does, but if not left on for too long it cleans it quite well.

Surelythere rapidly comes a point where it's cheaper to make a new one out of the right material, unless the survival of the company depends on constantly re-furbishing that grill at a proffit

There-in is the key to it all Dell. Profit!

So long are the days when products are expected to last 20+ years.
Many companies (thank God not all) have found that they can make a product at an 1/8 the cost and 1/4 the quality and sell it at a full quality price. Thus requiring the consumer to buy the product 4 times to reach the same time frame, while making the company 7 times the profit.
Make it a proprietary part, and guarantee a repeat customer.
I am not claiming that this the case here. Just giving reason behind the phrase, "They sure don't make it like they used to."

Is there no scope to replace it with a saltwater-resistant material, like plastics?

It could easily be done - however, this welding shop was hired specifically to resurrect these 'almost new' aluminum grills - not to fabricate new ones.

Perhaps 6 months from now, replacement with grp will be a plan.

Holy Horse Manure! Tell him not to smoke while he's doing the cleaning. Or maybe have the boss show him how to do it, " Could you move over closer to the welding table? The light's better. A little closer..."

Muratic acid (HCl) is a good cleaner for salt and other water deposits. I would use a dilute solution and try it on the back of the grill to see what the effect is.

I would agree with a diluted acid dip process. Using the correct acid is important to not damage the aluminum. T6061 is more durable against acid than say a softer 5052 or 3003 alloy. Here is a forum I ran across about cleaning aluminum.

http://www.finishing.com/104/57.shtml

For protection, anodizing or chromate conversion (chem-film) would be quite effective. Contact a local contract painting or powder coating shop (typically a company that performs MIL spec finishing). They would likely have contacts for people who do aluminum anodizing or corrosion resistant work.

I don't know, but after reading the thread and considering pits and crevices and time, plus the "good enough" factor, I'm about to suggest some salt water, and a light hit with a sandblaster.

If the aluminum is pitted after two months it probably has no surface treatment for protection. This surface treatment is called an anodic coat. In a salt environment you would need at least 20 microns.

If the aluminium is pitted with the anodic coat protection on it , the only way you can clean it is with caustic soda or sand paper.

However a good protection would be episodic paint. To paint the aluminium you have to strip it properly, and use a good chrome based primer.

Hello Snowboy,

How about using media blasting to clean the metal. Plastic bead or walnut shell media as opposed to sand will not eat away the metal, but will remove the corrosion and all other grime and contaminants leaving very clean metal. Acids may not remove all contaminates.
It may even smooth out some pitting, and will also get into areas where a mechanical polisher can't. The Alu will be ready to accept any further post treatments.
It is non-toxic and far less hazardous and cheaper to use and discard after use than acids. The only requirement is to have a blasting cabinet.

As for further corrosion protection, there are several ways to go. A surface prep of Alodine will work as a minimum amount of corrosion protection if the parts are to be painted.
With Alodine, you will need to remove all surface layer oxides in order for it to work properly. I would suggest powder painting after alodine as it tends wear better than other types of paint.

Hardcoat is surface conversion process that creates a hard Alu oxide layer that is more resistant to scratches than other types of anodizing, and may suit your purpose better. Scratches will allow further corrosion to form.

Good luck, hope this helps.

Thanks for this. We are moving forward with a wash and going with sacrificial anodes - but the links regarding anodizing are much appreciated.

Thnx

There is a proprietary brand moisture curing urethane, clear, which will totally insulate the alloy to make it inert to further action. Three coats will give protection for at least ten years. Even from acids. Hesitate to give brand names. Let me know if you want.

Their cleaning process is best for the app'n, and its falling-off-a-log easy.

Cheers,

Stu.

Diluted muriatic acid would clean it though household vinegar would too.

Solution of vinegar in a wet tumbler to descale grills.

Clean well and prep for zinc bath plating.

using muriatic acid

Use CHOOH:NH3OH at 5:1 Ratio. AKA: AC-AC etch.

Acidic acid and ammonia 5:1

Generally we use glacial acidic for the mix, then add water. You can use the 10% Acidic and household ammonia
