The weighment property will change if cotton was blended with different types of fibers and not properly intermixed. It can also happen if there is large difference in fiber size in length and thickness. The dynamic behaviour will differ and so the quality while forming yarn and cloth. A definite amount of moisture percent makes fiber stronger and easy to spun and this is best achieved either by properly blended or uniformity of the cotton fibers. Density of water molecule may also have other effects which may reflect in optical dissimilarity in some cases. You have to examine the property for the type of fiber you have. Best method for knowing the fact is Photoacoustics spectroscopy. This can make you to scan over small fiber bunch and to get moisture content and its molecular bonding nature as infrared signature. You can easily experiment on non transparent material under molecular resonance absorption on surface leading to transfer of acoustics vibrations in the chamber air or N2.
