Solar Powered Apartment - Trying to Determine Energy Formulas

07/16/2009 10:04 AM

Hi ..

I am working on a project for building a solar powered residential apartment.

I am done with the calculations like Energy Demand per month per year, Cost if connected to the grid.. now there are some more details that i require..

Just try if you guys can help me out..

  1. Sun path diagram of Chennai (INDIA)
  2. Global irradiation in Chennai
  3. Available solar energy in Chennai per day.

You would get a lot of information from your weather bureau. Sun light hours per day etc.

Some of the information like shade from trees, mountains and other structures you can only get at your site.

I have heard of a clown who spent a lot on solar heaters only to find that it did not work because of big trees around him. He had to remove the trees to go green. Now he complains his house is to warm.

The following covers the main key information necessary to calculate a solar system.

As for sun path diagram, that's the direction of the sun rising and setting thru the day.

Beatenblood,

Dont forget to consider Solar Hot water (evacuated tube collectors) to reduce max demand.

A large portions on electrical energy goes to hot water services.

This will reduce size and cost of Solar PV installation required.

Sapper

Invest in a Solar Pathfinder. It will give you daily insolation and solar pathway. There are more expensive variations to this one, but this one is simple, effective and inexpensive.
