Capacitor Banks

07/27/2009 6:21 PM

Recently in my plant in an 6.6kv vacuum bkr. fed motor feeder, i saw a capacitor bank of three nos. of capacitors connected in star connected in parallel, before motor.

What may be the utility of this capacitor bank ? Whether it may be a surge arrestor or something else ?

They sound like power factor correction capacitors connected across your three phase motor.

They are for sure the capacitor banks for power factor improvement for the lagging current drawn by the motor. Here, the capacitor banks and the motor act as a single unit of load resulting the power factor close to unity and the resultant current drawn by this system is less than the actual current drawn by the motor.

Power factor correction, which is CR4's 3rd most popular topic behind busbar sizing and cable sizing.
