The reactor is used for filtering out the AC component in DC circuit. The reactor is used in series while the capacitor is used in parallel.

If you are talking about the external reactor and capacitor connected to the power input side of the VFD then it is acting as a LC power filter to filter the incoming AC supply to the VFD.
