Vessel Clamp for Highly Corrosive Product

I need some ideas or pointers for designing some sort of vessel clamp.

In our plant, we have a vessel that contains HF acid. During a recent inspection, we have noticed a few areas that are near the minimum thickness for the vessel walls. We have already ordered another vessel to replace this one but we may need some sort of temporary protection until the new vessel arrives.

Currently, we are brainstorming ideas for protection and the more popular ones have been similar to a pipe clamp. We can't weld on the vessel or deform the vessel (plastic deformation) in order to achieve our goal.

I was wandering if anyone has come across a problem like this before and what are some of the solutions that you have seen. If anyone has a few tips or ideas to compliment/supplement our ideas, I would appreciate it.

Design conditions inside the vessel are 60psig @ 600°F.

I don't need any detailed designs for my problem just some ideas or some websites I can reference.

I just reread your post and I started thinking about the process conditions: 60psi and 600ºF. Seriously 600ºF? Are you talking about pure HF gas or is it an HF solution in water?

Need to know this kind of stuff before even thinking about the solution.

Material of construction (MOC) and the size of the vessel need to be known as well.

Please let us know! Considering that you are close to the minimum thickness (although MAWP = 1/3 of actual rupture pressure), this is a serious issue; solutions may even include stopping processing until the new vessel is in place and tested.

Er, at those conditions it might be a mixture of HF and H2O as vapour, i.e.steam.

Yes it is an HF solution although I don't know the concentration (maybe around 20% based on what I know of other parts of the process).

Material is Monel and size is 60" diameter.

We have an turnaround coming for this unit and this vessel is the driver so it is possible that we can stop the process.

However, I just need conceptual ideas at this point. That's why I left off most of the design variables. The conditions I gave are design conditions not operating.

Automated weld overlay is an accepted means of restoring pressure boundary thickness (unlike thermal spray). Based on the metallurgy involved, it has the added advantage of providing a barrier to future corrosion.

It's expensive but, it's often not nearly as costly as replacing a new vessel.

Not much help, but my advice would be to STAY OUT OF THE PLANT.

HF is nasty stuff as you know. Trying to shoot down HF vapour clouds with fire hoses is not something you want to get involved with.

G morning Mr Cingold, in concordance with Guru Mikerho, the kind of fluid (Gas or Solution) is a good help to thing about your question. Any way, you talk about Desing pressure and temperature. What about the operation conditions? Is possible to reduce these two conditions until safety values (New calcs.) without impact in your production, and wait for the new vessel arrival date?.

Another point, you have to prepare the by pass to the new vessel circuit integration.

I don't know the operating conditions for this.

I doubt we can reduce the conditions without impacting operations but it is something I will ask as we get a little further in our design.

Right now, we are just tossing around ideas so I thought I would ask the CR4 community to see if anyone has some tips.

Again, I'll stress the weld overlay option; it's a permanent solution whereas everything else being considered here is a simple band-aid fix.

I'd suggest that you contact a couple of the big players in this field to see what they can do for you. Some are quite fast. You might just find out that they can machine-overlay the vessel within the time already allocated to the turnaround.

You may contact "Special Metals" in Huntington WV to see what kind of "rubber"-(believe it or not) that they use in their acid transporting railcars.

I think not for HF. Teflon maybe but it is porous to HF. Letharge cured viton - maybe. Kalraz - not enough money!
