As a side note, sapphire derived bullet proof glass intentionally made with tiny inclusions and then squeezed at high temp and many kilobars until the inclusuon are below 1/4 wave of light. The inclusions prevent crack propagation very well. Called aluminum oxynitride. Here is the basic patent.

Actually I need some modification of the metrix in the form of Al2O3:C to be fabricated as optical grade rods of about 1mm to 10mm diameter. That is why I am looking for some one who has crystal growth lab for this material.
