refrigerator tilt?

09/04/2009 2:25 PM

Hello,

Our refer is running perfectly. We are going to have our floor tiled and we need to tilt it back so the front is about 6" / 8" off the floor for a couple of days. Will this hurt our refer?

Thanks,

Ron

Hey Ron,

Just came back from HVAC school, so I think I can help you.

Rule of thumb is to let the unit sit flat (upright) for twice the amount of time it was tilted or layed down. This of course is with the unit off (like it was moved or shipped). Now in your case it sounds like you intend to leave it running while you do this. Not advisable!! You may disrupt the oil level in the compressor. Some oil flows through the system with the refrigerant and some sits in the botton of the compressor. (like a car engine)

If you lean this unit too far oil might "slug" the valves in the compressor and fry it. If you want to leave it running and tile the floor........move it to a different room!

I.E. patio, spare room, hallway.

Been here, done this,........ hated it! Happy tiling!

Hope I helped ya!

Kevin

Do you keep your refer in the refrigerator? Probably won't hurt the refer but might not do the refrigerator any good.

GA to "handydad." You might not have a problem (your tilt is not extreme), but without knowing the internal geometry of the compressor, it is better to be safe than sorry. His suggestions are pretty easy to do, so I would second the motion.

Tilt it forward 1" and put blocks under feet, then tilt back 2" and put blocks under the feet. Continue this teeter-totter until the unit is 6-8" off the floor level front to back.

Then arrange a support to allow tiling.

Empty out, unplug.

After you finish your work, return to the operating position.

Let stand overnight, or 12 to 24 hours.

Reconnect and put your stuff back into it after it recovers operating temps.

Do not attempt to operate while it is tilted as much as your need to tilt it. Bad for the mechanicals.

Pull it out and tile all the way back to the wall you will not regert it. Wet tile is much better than rotten wood back there.

The wording is wrong...

Should be: "I stopped talking to myself WHEN I discovered I wasn't listening."
